The following is a list of diesel and electric locomotives produced by Electroputere Craiova, Romania. For Romanian Railways Diesel locomotives The diesel electric locomotives employed by CFR and built by Electroputere Craiova are known as classes 60 to 68 and originally registered under the series 060-DA. They were based on a design created by SLM Winterthur, BBC Baden and Sulzer Winterthur and bears, externally, resemblance to AE 6/6 Swiss electric locomotives. New diesel modernised (post-1999) locomotives are painted in blue livery, while older ones have grey livery. A diesel locomotive is a type of railway locomotive in which the prime mover is a diesel engine. Electric Locomotive
An electric locomotive is a locomotive powered by electricity from overhead lines, a third rail or on-board energy storage such as a battery or a supercapacitor. Locomotives with on-board fuelled prime movers, such as diesel engines or gas turbines, are classed as diesel-electric or gas turbine-electric and not as electric locomotives, because the electric generator/motor combination serves only as a power transmission system. Electric locomotives benefit from the high efficiency of electric motors, often above 90% (not including the inefficiency of generating the electricity). Additional efficiency can be gained from regenerative braking, which allows kinetic energy to be recovered during braking to put power back on the line. Newer electric locomotives use AC motor-inverter drive systems that provide for regenerative braking. CFR Marfă
CFR Marfă is the state-owned freight railway business of Romania. Formerly the freight division of Căile Ferate Române (CFR), it was separated in 1998 to become a semi-independent business. In April 2013, under pressure from the IMF to reform the state sector, the Romanian government offered to sell a 51% stake in CFR Marfă In May 2013, three bids were received; from OmniTRAX, SC Grup Feroviar Român, and a partnership between Transferoviar Grup and Donau-Finanz. The government rejected all three bids. In September 2013, the 51% stake in CFR Marfă was sold to Grup Feroviar Român for €202 million, although complete payment would be deferred until the deal is approved by competition authorities. CFR Class 47
The CFR Class 47 is a class of electric locomotives built for the Romanian Railways for use on the Romanian electrified network. They were originally built by Electroputere from 1965 to 1991 and designated as the CFR class 40 or 41. All Class 47 locomotives were modernized by Softronic from 2007. They are operated both by CFR Marfǎ and CFR Cǎlǎtori. History The locomotives are essentially a rebuild/modernisation of the CFR Class EA that were built from the mid 1960s to the early 1990s by the Craiova locomotive works. Starting with the mid 1990s, it was decided to rebuild a number of locomotives, a number of them being modernised between 1998 and 2002 by Siemens-Secheron, resulting in CFR Class 45. CFR Class 40/41/42
The Electroputere LE 5100, otherwise known as CFR Class 40/41/42 is a family of electric locomotives (separated by 3 classes) built for the Romanian Railways (CFR) for use on the Romanian electrified network. Over 1000 Class 40s were constructed by Electroputere (EP) under ASEA license in EPs Craiova Works from 1967 to 1991. Entering service in 1965, the Class 40 also operated on private railroads after the repeal of CFRs monopoly on rail transport. The vast majority of all the engines are still in service, as of 2020, having become an icon for the Romanian Railways.
