This is a list of Wikipedia:WikiProject Earthquakes/notability guidelines, notable earthquakes that had epicentres in Spain, or significantly affected the country. Geology Spain lies on the Eurasian Plate just to the north of its boundary with the African Plate. The southernmost part of Spain is the zone with the highest seismicity in the country. The African Plate is obliquely converging with the Eurasian Plate at about 5 mm/year. A WikiProject, or Wikiproject, is a Wikimedia movement affinity group for contributors with shared goals. WikiProjects are prevalent within the largest wiki, Wikipedia, and exist to varying degrees within Wikimedia project, sister projects such as Wiktionary, Wikiquote, Wikidata, and Wikisource. They also exist in different languages, and translation of articles is a form of their collaboration. During the COVID-19 pandemic, CBS News noted the role of Wikipedia's WikiProject Medicine in maintaining the accuracy of articles related to the disease. Another WikiProject that has drawn attention is WikiProject Women Scientists, which was profiled by ''Smithsonian Magazine, Smithsonian'' for its efforts to improve coverage of women scientists which the profile noted had "helped increase the number of female scientists on Wikipedia from around 1,600 to over 5,000". 1956 Atarfe-Albolote Earthquake
The 1956 Atarfe-Albolote earthquake ( es, link=no, Terremoto de Atarfe-Albolote de 1956) was a magnitude 5.0 earthquake that occurred at 18:38 CEST (17:38 UTC) on April 19, 1956. The earthquake affected a wide area, and especially the area between Sierra Elvira and Granada. According to the press at the time, the towns of Atarfe and Albolote were ruined and Santa Fe, Maracena and some neighborhoods in the capital of Granada were badly affected. The earthquake registered an epicentral intensity of VIII, a magnitude of 5.0 and a hypocentral depth of 6.3 km. Numerous aftershocks occurred, of which the most important were recorded between April 19 and May 8. Twelve people died and 60 were left injured. Among other effects, the earthquake caused rockfalls in Sierra Elvira and landslides along the Beiro River. 1790 Oran Earthquake
The 1790 Oran earthquake occurred on October 10, striking near the coastal city of Oran in Algeria. The earthquake had an evaluated maximum seismic intensity of VIII to X on the European macroseismic scale (EMS-98). An estimated 3,000 people died during the earthquake and accompanying tsunami. The magnitude of this earthquake has been disputed among members of the paleoseismology field, with estimates ranging from 7.5 to even as small as 5.5. Impact Beginning on October 8, the Spanish-conquered city was rocked by a series of strong earthquakes which were felt as far as Spain and Malta. The earthquakes were felt by residents in Granada, Cartagena, Málaga, and Santa Fe. Violent shaking was felt at Oran until October 25. 1804 Almería Earthquake
The 1804 Almería earthquake was a highly destructive seismic event in the Province of Almería, southern Spain. It occurred on August 25 at 8:25 pm local time. The mainshock had a maximum intensity assigned VIII–IX on the European macroseismic scale (EMS), and an estimated moment magnitude of 6.2–6.4 . At least 400 people were reported killed. Tectonic setting Southern Spain is located within a zone of compression caused by the complex convergence between the Nubian and Iberian plates. The plate boundary location remains poorly defined. Seismicity is high in a zone known as the Eastern Betics Shear Zone. Moderately large earthquakes greater than magnitude 4.5 are infrequent, but have been destructive. 1829 Torrevieja Earthquake
The 1829 Torrevieja earthquake occurred near the city of Torrevieja, Province of Alicante of southern Spain on March 21, 1829. It had an estimated magnitude of 6.6 and a Mercalli intensity of IX (''Violent''). It severely damaged many cities. The event was named after the city of Torrevieja because it was the largest locality to be affected.
