This is a list of species of damselflies and dragonflies recorded in Australia. Common names of species are linked, beside their scientific names. The list is split into two groups: damselflies (suborder Zygoptera) and other dragonflies (infraorder Anisoptera). Those groups are organized in Families and then Genera and Species. ''Aciagrion fragilis '' is a species of damselfly in the family Coenagrionidae, commonly known as a blue slim. It is a small, slender damselfly, the male is blue and black. It has been recorded from northern Australia, New Guinea and the Lesser Sunda Islands in Indonesia, where it inhabits still waters and swamps. Etymology The species name ''fragilis'' is a Latin word meaning fragile, or easily broken. In 1906, Robin Tillyard named this species probably in contrast to other members of the genus ''Ischnura'', where it had been provisionally placed. Argiocnemis Rubescens
''Argiocnemis rubescens'' is a species of damselfly in the family Coenagrionidae, commonly known as the red-tipped shadefly. It is a widespread species extending from India to southern China, south-east Asia, New Guinea and Australia. It prefers fresh still waters such as pools, marshes and swamps. The adult is a small to medium-sized damselfly with a length of 35 to 40mm, and the hindwing less than 22mm. When immature it is a pale reddish brown. The mature male is dark with pale green stripes on the thorax, and red on segments 8 and 9. In Australia, the distribution is in suitable habitat from Shark Bay in the west, across the north of the continent, to about Point Hicks in the south-east. The taxon has been assessed in the IUCN Red List as least concern. Etymology The species name ''rubescens'' is a Latin word meaning ''reddish''. ''Agriocnemis pygmaea'' (pygmy wisp) is a species of damselfly in the family Coenagrionidae. It is also known as wandering midget, pygmy dartlet or wandering wisp. It is well distributed across Asia and parts of Australia. Description and habitat It is a small damselfly with black capped green eyes, black thorax with apple green stripes on lateral sides. Segments 1 to 7 of its abdomen is black on dorsum and pale green on ventral half. The remaining segments are orange-red. Very old males may get pruinosed on the dorsum of the head and the thorax with snowy white, making all the markings beneath being quite obscured. Female is more robust and exhibits several color morphs. The green color of the male is replaced by red in the females in the red forms. In androchrome forms, the female has same green colors as in the male. Female colour variation is depended on ontogenic colour change associated with sexual development too.
