This is a list of American football players who have played for the Detroit Lions or for the Portsmouth Spartans (1930–33), in the National Football League (NFL). It includes players that have played at least one match in the NFL regular season. The Detroit Lions franchise was founded in Portsmouth, Ohio as the Portsmouth Spartans. In 1934, the franchise moved to Detroit and changed their name to the Lions, which was a play on the name of the Detroit Tigers. American Football
American football (referred to simply as football in the United States and Canada), also known as gridiron, is a team sport played by two teams of eleven players on a rectangular field with goalposts at each end. The offense, the team with possession of the oval-shaped football, attempts to advance down the field by running with the ball or passing it, while the defense, the team without possession of the ball, aims to stop the offense's advance and to take control of the ball for themselves. The offense must advance at least ten yards in four downs or plays; if they fail, they turn over the football to the defense, but if they succeed, they are given a new set of four downs to continue the drive. Points are scored primarily by advancing the ball into the opposing team's end zone for a touchdown or kicking the ball through the opponent's goalposts for a field goal. Gerald Alexander
Gerald Alexander (born June 28, 1984) is an American football coach and former safety,. He played college football at Boise State, and was selected by the Detroit Lions in the second round of the 2007 NFL Draft. He also played for the Jacksonville Jaguars, Carolina Panthers, Miami Dolphins, and New York Jets. Alexander was a former graduate assistant with Arkansas State University and University of Washington. In July 2015, he became the defensive backs coach at Indiana State University. In December 2015, he accepted the position of defensive backs coach at Montana State University, working under head coach Jeff Choate. Early years Alexander attended Rancho Cucamonga High School from 1998 to 2002, where he was a track and field athlete as well. Charley Ane
Charles Teetai Ane Jr. (January 25, 1931 – May 9, 2007) was an American football offensive lineman who played in the National Football League (NFL) for the Detroit Lions. He played college football at the University of Southern California. Early years Ane excelled in baseball, basketball and track as well as football at the Punahou School in Honolulu, Hawaii. He was a key two-way lineman on the powerful Buffanblu teams of the late 1940s. He was inducted into the Hawaii Sports Hall of Fame. In 2015, he was inducted into the Polynesian Football Hall of Fame. College career Ane attended Compton Community College, before transferring to the University of Southern California. Eric Andolsek
Eric Thomas Andolsek (August 22, 1966 – June 23, 1992) was an American football offensive lineman in the National Football League (NFL) with the Detroit Lions. He played college football at Louisiana State University. College career Andolsek was born and raised in Thibodaux, Louisiana. He was a star offensive and defensive player at Thibodaux High School from 1981 to 1983. From high school, he went to LSU as an offensive lineman. He played at LSU from 1984 to 1987. Andolsek was named a Freshman All-American by '' Football News'' in 1984. Scotty Anderson (born November 24, 1979) is a former American football wide receiver in the National Football League (NFL) and the Arena Football League (AFL). He played college football for Grambling State University. High school years Anderson attended Jonesboro-Hodge High School in Louisiana and was a letterman in football. College career As a wide receiver for the Grambling Tigers, Anderson had a total of 69 receptions for 1146 yards and 10 touchdowns his senior season. Gary Anderson (running Back)
Gary Wayne Anderson (born April 18, 1961 in Columbia, Missouri) is an American former professional football player who was a running back in the National Football League (NFL), United States Football League (USFL) and Canadian Football League (CFL) from 1983 to 1995. USFL Anderson was drafted in the first round of the 1983 NFL Draft by the San Diego Chargers, but could not agree on a contract. Instead, Anderson signed to play for the Tampa Bay Bandits of the USFL in 1983 after a college football career at the University of Arkansas. Anderson had filed suit against his first agent, Dr. Jerry A. Argovitz, and the Tampa Bay Bandits. The suit alleged that Argovitz misrepresented the Chargers' offer and that Argovitz steered Anderson to the Bandits in exchange for a USFL franchise (the Houston Gamblers). Courtney Anderson
Courtney Jerome Anderson Sr. (born November 19, 1980) is a former American football tight end. Born in Greenville, Texas, Anderson attended high school in Richmond, California and played college football at Contra Costa College and San Jose State University. He was drafted by the Oakland Raiders in the seventh round of the 2004 NFL Draft and spent three seasons with that team. Uell Stanley Andersen (September 14, 1917 – September 24, 1986) was an American football player and self-help and short story author during the 1950s and 1960s. He is best known for his book, ''Three Magic Words.'' Biography Born to Norwegian-American parents in Portland, Oregon, Andersen attended Stanford University. He played college football for Stanford and was captain of the 1939 Stanford Indians football team. He was also one of the nation's top competitors in the shot put while attending Stanford. Walt Ambrose
Walter Louis Ambrose (August 7, 1905 – January 18, 1968) was an American football guard who played one game in the National Football League (NFL) for the Portsmouth Spartans. He played college football at Carroll University. Early life and education Ambrose was born on August 7, 1905, in Portage, Wisconsin. He attended Portage High School, where he played as a fullback from 1921 until his graduation in 1924. He also was a "star" player in basketball and baseball. In 1925, Ambrose enrolled at the University of Wisconsin, and was considered the best fullback prospect on the team, but "circumstances prevented" him from playing there. He instead joined Carroll University in fall of 1926, where he transitioned to the tackle position.
