List Of Deputy Prime Ministers Of Suriname
The Deputy Prime Minister of Suriname () was a title given to a member of the Cabinet of Ministers of Suriname between 1954 and 1988, often to recognize members of other parties in the ruling coalition. The deputy prime minister served as acting prime minister in the absence of the Prime Minister of Suriname. This position was abolished when the current Constitution of Suriname went into effect in 1988; however, its functions were continued in the extra-constitutional position of Deputy Vice President () from 1988 to 1990. Olton Van Genderen
Olton Willem van Genderen (17 October 1921 – 9 November 1990) was a Surinamese civil servant and politician. He served as Deputy Prime Minister of Suriname from 24 December 1973 until the coup d'état of 25 February 1980. He was one of the main negotiators for the Independence of Suriname. Biography Van Genderen was born on 17 October 1921 in Albina. He worked for the customs agency. In 1950s, he went to Rotterdam for four years, and became a licensed customs officer. Van Genderen became active in the trade union and politics. He was given the honorary title ''Da Djendé'' ( Ndyuka: Beautiful teacher). In 1958, he was first elected to the Estates of Suriname, and was re-elected five times. On 16 May 1967, he was elected Chairman of the Estates of Suriname, and served until 1 September 1969. National Democratic Party (Suriname)
The National Democratic Party ( nl, Nationale Democratische Partij, NDP) is a political party in Suriname. It was founded on 4 July 1987 by Surinamese leader Dési Bouterse, and was one of the first parties in the country to have a stable base of support across different ethnic groups. In the 2015 general election the party scored 45.56% of the vote and 26 of 51 seats in parliament. NDP chairman Bouterse was elected President of Suriname on 19 July 2010, after he won the 2010 elections with his Mega Combination of which the NDP was the dominant party. The party won the 2015 elections as well, winning 26 seats against an alliance of 7 (later 6) opposition parties. In the 2020 elections, the NDP won 16 of the 51 seats. Harry Radhakishun
Harry Sharuh Radhakishun (25 July 1921 – 3 January 1983) was a Surinamese businessman and politician. He served as Deputy Prime Minister of Suriname and Minister of Finance from 1969 to 1973, and as Minister of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries from 1963 to 1967. Early life Radhakishun was born in Paramaribo in 1921. He studied at the Hendrikschool ( Mulo), and also attended law classes taught by Julius Caesar de Miranda. He took part for a few years in the correspondence course for accountancy and commercial sciences offered by the La Salle Extension University in Chicago. Publisher Together with his wife Fanny and close friend Lou Lichtveld, Radhakishun established the publishing house "Radhakishun & Co." in Paramaribo in 1952. Politics Radhakishun was a founding member of the VHP. He was a member of the Estates of Suriname (national legislature) from 1951 to 1963 and from 1967 to 1969. Johan Adolf "Jopie" Pengel (20 January 1916 – 5 June 1970) was a Surinamese politician, and prime minister of Suriname from 30 June 1963 to 5 March 1969 for the National Party of Suriname (NPS). Biography Pengel was born in Paramaribo on 20 January 1916. He went to law school, but did not graduate. Van Dijck owned a large parcel of ground close to Pengel's home which was rented to poor Afro and Indo-Surinamese people, and started to demand large rent increases. Pengel started a protest movement against Van Dijck, and managed to raise enough money to buy the land. In 1949, he joined the National Party of Suriname, and was elected to the Estates of Suriname. Sewraam Rambaran Mishre (14 March 1915 – 15 February 1964) was a Surinamese physician and politician who served as the Deputy Prime Minister of Suriname from 30 June 1963 until his death. Biography Rambaran Mishre was born on 14 March 1915 in Nickerie District. He studied at the Geneeskundige School, a free non-academic medical school,. Severinus Desiré "Freek" Emanuels (27 February 1910 – 27 August 1981) was a Surinamese politician, and Prime Minister of Suriname from 25 June 1958 to 30 June 1963. Biography Emanuels was born in Rotterdam on 27 February 1910. He studied law at the Utrecht University. From 1934 to 1950, he worked as a judge in the Dutch East Indies, and its successor Indonesia. In 1948, he was an advisor for the Federal Conference of Bandung. Between 1952 and 1955, he served as Surinamese Minister of Finance in the Currie government.
