Flag Of The United States (1863-1865)
The national flag of the United States of America, often referred to as the ''American flag'' or the ''U.S. flag'', consists of thirteen equal horizontal stripes of red (top and bottom) alternating with white, with a blue rectangle in the canton (referred to specifically as the "union") bearing fifty small, white, five-pointed stars arranged in nine offset horizontal rows, where rows of six stars (top and bottom) alternate with rows of five stars. 1st Delaware Infantry Regiment
The 1st Delaware Infantry Regiment, later known as the 1st Delaware Veteran Infantry Regiment was a United States volunteer infantry regiment raised for Union Army service in the American Civil War. Part of the II Corps it served in the Eastern Theater of the American Civil War. Organisation and Remusterings 90-Day Volunteers When the Civil War began in April 1861, there were only about 16,000 men in the U.S. Army, and many Southern soldiers and officers were already resigning and joining the new Confederate States Army. With this drastic shortage of men in the army, President Abraham Lincoln called on the states to raise a force of 75,000 volunteers for three months to put down the insurrection in the South. Accordingly, the 1st Delaware Infantry Regiment was raised at Wilmington, Delaware, on May 22, 1861, and mustered into Federal service on May 28. The 2nd Delaware Infantry Regiment was an infantry regiment in the Union Army during the American Civil War. 6th Delaware Infantry Regiment
The 6th Delaware Infantry Regiment was an infantry regiment of the Union Army in the American Civil War. The regiment was formed in Delaware in late 1862 with a 90-day term of enlistment. According to the regiment's service terms, the men of the regiment would continue their civilian occupations, drilling twice a week, until called upon for active duty; they would not be paid until they entered active service. The regiment completed formation on December 18, 1862, but would not be called into active service until June 27, 1863 under the command of Colonel Edwin Wilmer. While on active service, the regiment guarded a railroad in Maryland and also guarded prisoners of war at Fort Delaware. By August 23, all but one of the regiment's companies had been mustered out of service; the final one, Company I, ended its service on September 5. Raised in response to the Confederate cavalry raid into Maryland in mid-1864, the regiment guarded railroad bridges and garrisoned the Baltimore defenses during its month of service. History The 7th Delaware Infantry Regiment was organized at Wilmington, Delaware for 30 days emergency service on 12 July 1864, in response to Confederate cavalry commander Jubal Early's raid into Maryland and the Union defeat at the Battle of Monocacy, to guard the approaches to Wilmington. The 9th Delaware Infantry Regiment was an infantry regiment that served in the Union Army between August 30, 1864 and January 23, 1865, during the American Civil War. 1st Delaware Cavalry Battalion
The 1st Delaware Cavalry Battalion was a cavalry regiment of the Union Army in the American Civil War. Raised in late 1862, the 1st Delaware Cavalry Battalion was initially to be raised as the 1st Delaware Cavalry Regiment, but was reduced to a battalion due to the inability of the state to fill a cavalry regiment to full strength. It served on provost duty in Maryland and Delaware from 1863 to early 1864, and fought in the action at Westminster known as Corbit's Charge during the Gettysburg Campaign.
