Caribair was an airline based in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. It operated scheduled services within the Dominican Republic and to Haiti, as well as charter flights and air taxi services throughout the Caribbean. Its main base was La Isabela International Airport, Santo Domingo.Flight International 3 April 2007 History The airline was established and began operations in 1983. It began operations with two aircraft and changed ownership in 1988. On January 20, 2009 the Dominican Civil Aviation Institute (IDAC) ordered Caribair to suspend its flight operations due to alleged "operational irregularities". Caribair reportedly was found by IDAC inspectors to be "masking multiple commercial operations as private operations in unauthorized airplanes." The Douglas DC-7 is an American transport aircraft built by the Douglas Aircraft Company from 1953 to 1958. A derivative of the DC-6, it was the last major piston engine-powered transport made by Douglas, being developed shortly after the earliest jet airliner—the de Havilland Comet—entered service and only a few years before the jet-powered Douglas DC-8 first flew in 1958. Unlike other aircraft in Douglas's line of propeller-driven aircraft, no examples remain in service in the present day, as compared to the far more successful DC-3 and DC-6. An airbox is an empty chamber on the inlet of most combustion engines. It collects air from outside and feeds it to the intake hoses of each cylinder. Older engines drew air directly from the surroundings into each individual carburetor. Modern engines instead draw air into an airbox, which is connected by individual hoses to each carburetor or directly to the intake ports in fuel-injected engines, thus avoiding an extra intake manifold. The airbox allows the use of one air filter instead of multiples, reducing complexity. Air Dominicana was the flag carrier airline for the Dominican Republic. It planned to begin operations in October 2009 using a Boeing 737-400 aircraft with daily services to New York City and Miami. A second Boeing 737 was due to join the fleet later. Its headquarters were on the fourth floor of the Air Europa building in Santo Domingo. History Air Dominicana was incorporated on 9 May 2007 in Santo Domingo with a capital of US$10 million. On 15 December 2008, the US Department of Transportation issued an FAA license which granted Air Dominicana the right to operate flights to the United States.
