The French Navy consists of nearly 100 vessels of the '' Force d'action navale'' (Naval action force) and the 9 submarines of the '' Forces sous-marines'' (Submarine force). ''Le Terrible'' is a strategic nuclear submarine of the French Navy. The boat was launched on 21 March 2008 On 27 January 2010, at 9h25, '' Le Terrible'' launched an M51 SLBM from underwater, in Audierne Bay. The missile reached its target off North Carolina; the flight took about 20 minutes. The submarine was put into service on 20 September 2010 armed with the 16 M51 missiles. ''Terrible'' is fitted with a new SYCOBS combat system (SYstem de COmbat Barracuda-SSBN) which will also be installed on the new Barracuda class SSNs. ''Tonnerre'' (L9014; lit. ''Thunder'') is an amphibious assault helicopter carrier of the Marine Nationale. She is the eighth vessel to bear the name and the second ship in the amphibious assault ship series. Construction and career ''Tonnerre'' was laid down in two parts. ''Émeraude'' is a nuclear attack submarine from the first generation of attack submarines of the French Navy. The boat is the fourth of the ''Rubis'' series. Between May 1994 and December 1995, the boat undertook a major refitting, which upgraded capabilities to the level of the '' Améthyste''. On 30 March 1994, an accidental explosion occurred in the engine compartment while the boat was engaged in a naval exercise off Toulon.
