The Consul-General from the United Kingdom in Shanghai is the United Kingdom's Diplomat, diplomatic representative within the city of Shanghai in the People's Republic of China. From 1842 to 1949 the Consul-General's office and residence was located in the Former Consulate-General of the United Kingdom, Shanghai, British Consulate General in Shanghai on the Bund; from 1985 to 2014 in the Shanghai Centre on Nanjing West Road; and from December 2014 in the new British Centre on West Beijing Road. Excellency
Excellency is an honorific style given to certain high-level officers of a sovereign state, officials of an international organization, or members of an aristocracy. Once entitled to the title "Excellency", the holder usually retains the right to that courtesy throughout their lifetime, although in some cases the title is attached to a particular office, and is held only for the duration of that office. Generally people addressed as ''Excellency'' are heads of state, heads of government, governors, ambassadors, Roman Catholic bishops and high-ranking ecclesiastics and others holding equivalent rank (e.g., heads of international organizations). Sidney Barton
Sir Sidney Barton (26 November 1876 – 20 January 1946) was a British barrister and diplomat, serving as consul-general in Shanghai and as minister to Ethiopia. Early life Sidney Barton was born in Exeter, Devonshire, England on 26 November 1876, the fourth son of Captain James Barton and Mary Barbara Barclay. The Bartons were a distinguished Anglo-Irish family that came to Ireland from Lancashire in 1599 with the Earl of Essex, gaining lands in County Fermanagh. Barton was descended through his mother from the Barclay baronets, a title in the Baronetage of Nova Scotia, his grandfather being the 10th Baronet, Sir David William Barclay of Pierston. Sir Colville Barclay, a fellow diplomat and third son of the twelfth Baronet, was a cousin. Barton was educated at St Paul's School, London. Brian Stewart (diplomat)
Brian Thomas Webster Stewart (27 April 1922 – 16 August 2015) was a British soldier, colonial official, diplomat and the second-most senior officer in the British Secret Intelligence Service. He fought in the Second World War, played an influential role in the Malayan Emergency, then served as British Consul-General in Shanghai on the eve of the cultural revolution, as British Representative to North Vietnam during the Vietnam War, and as the Director of Technical Services and Assistant Chief of the Secret Intelligence Service (MI6) from 1974 to 1979. He is credited with being one of the first China specialists in the Secret Intelligence Service, and the first Director of Support Services. William Henry "Harry" Wright (January 10, 1835 – October 3, 1895) was an English-born professional baseball player, manager (baseball), manager, and developer. He assembled, managed, and played Center fielder, center field for baseball's first fully professional team, the 1869 Cincinnati Red Stockings. He is credited with introducing innovations such as backing up infield plays from the outfield and shifting defensive alignments based on hitters' tendencies. The Overseas Chinese Affairs Office of the State Council (OCAO) is an external name of the United Front Work Department (UFWD) of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). Prior to 2018, OCAO was an administrative office under the State Council of the People's Republic of China responsible for liaising with and influencing overseas Chinese residing abroad or returning to. Sir Michael Cavenagh Gillett KBE CMG (12 July 1907 – 20 January 1971) was a British diplomat. Education Gillett was educated at the Royal Naval College, Osborne and Royal Navy College, Dartmouth and then at Manchester University. Career in China Gillett was appointed a student interpreter in the British China Consular Service in January 1929 and served as Vice-Consul in Canton (now Guangzhou), Hankow, Nanking and Kashgar. He was promoted to the rank of Consul in 1937 and was Acting Consul General in Kashgar from June 1938 and Acting Consul at Tengyueh (now Tengchong) from 1940 to 1942. Sir Anthony Hastings George KCMG (乔治爵士; 3 November 1886 – 9 January 1944) was a British diplomat, who served as British Consul-General in Shanghai and Boston during the Second World War. Early life Anthony Hastings George was born in Bristol, England on 3 November 1886. He was the son of William Edwards George and Charlotte Elizabeth Otway. Sir Herbert Phillips Order of the British Empire, OBE, Order of St Michael and St George, KCMG, (1878-1957) was a British diplomat who served in China. His last position before retirement from government service was as British List of Consuls-General of the United Kingdom in Shanghai, Consul-General in Shanghai.
