The British Consul General in New York is head of the British Consulate General in New York, United States, which provide services to British nationals living in and visiting New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Fairfield County in Connecticut. The office predates 1857 and played a critical role when the capitol of the United States was New York. One of the earliest Consuls-General was Thomas Henry Barclay, a native New Yorker who was a Loyalist during the American Revolution who later served the Crown as a resident of Nova Scotia. He served as Consul-General in New York from 1799 (to 1822), replacing Sir John Temple, the first Consul-General and also native born to North America. The consulate is located in an office block at 845 Third Avenue, New York. Consulate General
A consul is an official representative of the government of one state in the territory of another, normally acting to assist and protect the citizens of the consul's own country, as well as to facilitate trade and friendship between the people of the two countries. A consul is distinguished from an ambassador, the latter being a representative from one head of state to another, but both have a form of immunity. There can be only one ambassador from one country to another, representing the first country's head of state to that of the second, and their duties revolve around diplomatic relations between the two countries; however, there may be several consuls, one in each of several major cities, providing assistance with bureaucratic issues to both the citizens of the consul's own country traveling or living abroad and to the citizens of the country in which the consul resides who wish to travel to or trade with the consul's country. Francis Evans (diplomat)
Sir Francis Edward Evans (4 April 1897 – 21 August 1983) was a British diplomat. Born in Belfast, Ireland, he was educated at the city's Belfast Royal Academy before being commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Royal Irish Rifles in December 1916. After serving in the First World War, he entered the civil service in 1919, and the following year completed a course for new consular entrants at the London School of Economics. Between 1920 and 1926 Evans was the British vice-consul at New York City, and for another three years after that at Boston. In 1929, he was sent to Colón, Panama, remaining there until 1932, when he again returned to the United States. He subsequently spent five years as consul at Los Angeles, and after a period at the Foreign Office he returned to New York as consul general there, an appointment he held until 1950. Antony Phillipson
Antony John Phillipson (born 13 January 1971) is a British diplomat, and as of 2021, British High Commissioner to South Africa. He was High Commissioner to Singapore from 2011 to April 2015, and from 2017 to June 2021 was the British Consul-General in New York and Her Majesty's Trade Commissioner for North America. Career Phillipson was educated at Marlborough College and Keble College, Oxford. Sir Alan Stanley Collins, KCVO, CMG (; born 1 April 1948), is a retired British diplomat and former Consul General in New York City (2007–11), High Commissioner to Singapore (2003–07) and Ambassador to the Philippines (1998–2002). Collins joined the Foreign and Commonwealth Office in 1981 as a Desk Office after working in the Ministry of Defence for around 11 years.
