This is a list of conservation areas in the West Midlands, England. There are a total of 137 conservation areas throughout the West Midlands. Birmingham Birmingham has 27 conservation areas. The first conservation areas in Birmingham were designated in 1969. Birmingham City Council have designed 31 conservation areas, of which one, St Peter's Place, have been de-designated in 1976 following the demolition of the church in its centre. The Castle Bromwich Conservation Area was transferred to Solihull following a boundary amendment from 1 April 1988. The former Key Hill and St Paul's Conservation Areas were incorporated into the Jewellery Quarter Conservation Area on 27 September 2000. Coventry Coventry has 15 conservation areas. Protected areas or conservation areas are locations which receive protection because of their recognized natural, ecological or cultural values. There are several kinds of protected areas, which vary by level of protection depending on the enabling laws of each country or the regulations of the international organizations involved. Generally speaking though, protected areas are understood to be those in which human presence or at least the exploitation of natural resources (e.g. firewood, non-timber forest products, water, ...) is limited. The term "protected area" also includes marine protected areas, the boundaries of which will include some area of ocean, and transboundary protected areas that overlap multiple countries which remove the borders inside the area for conservation and economic purposes. Bournville Village Trust
Bournville Village Trust is an organisation that was created to maintain and improve the suburb of Bournville, located in Birmingham. However, during the 20th century it expanded its geographical coverage to include developments in Shenley Green, Lightmoor in Telford, Bloomsbury in Nechells and Rowheath. History Elizabeth Cadbury succeeded her husband as chair of the Bournville Village Trust in 1922. In 1861, George Cadbury and his brother Richard, took over their father's small business, Cadburys, then based in central Birmingham. The business expanded into the manufacture of pure cocoa and then chocolate bars and filled chocolates. As the city premises was no longer large enough, the two brothers purchased land in the countryside, four miles out of Birmingham (at that time). Moseley
Moseley is a suburb of south Birmingham, England, south of the city centre. The area is a popular cosmopolitan residential location and leisure destination, with a number of bars and restaurants. The area also has a number of boutiques and other independent retailers. It is located within the Moseley and Kings Heath Ward of the city, in the constituency of Hall Green. Historically it lay within Worcestershire. History Moseley was listed in the Domesday Book of 1086 as Museleie. Moor Pool
Moor Pool (or Moorpool) is a garden suburb within the ward of Harborne, Birmingham, England. It was designated a Conservation Area in July 1970, which was raised by an Article 4(2) direction order in 2006. A Conservation Area Character Appraisal and Management Plan was adopted in March 2012. History The Moor Pool estate was established in 1907 by John Sutton Nettlefold, who was part of the Guest Keen Nettlefold (GKN) family. It formed part of the Garden City concept, shared by George Cadbury in Bournville, to create low density housing with many interspersed green spaces, and community facilities. The estate was built with a community hall (complete with skittle alley and snooker tables), two tennis clubs, a bowling green, numerous allotments, and the Moor Pool (pond) itself; all of these facilities remain today for residents' use. Soho, Birmingham
Soho is an area that is in Central Birmingham and Smethwick, approximately 2 miles north west of Birmingham city centre on the A41. The name is an abbreviation of South House, denoting that it was located to the south of Handsworth. The section of the A41 separating Handsworth from Winson Green is known as Soho Road. Soho expanded dramatically during the 19th century with the construction of numerous houses and factories, and immigration from the Commonwealth was centred in these homes during the 1950s and 1960s. Most of the immigrants who settled in Soho were of Indian origin. Further housebuilding took place by the local council during the 1960s and 1970s. Lozells
Lozells is a loosely defined inner-city area in West Birmingham, England. It is centred on Lozells Road, and is known for its multi-racial population. It is part of the ward of Lozells and East Handsworth and lies between the districts of Handsworth and Aston. Lozells has a high population density compared to East Handsworth. It is a very ethnically diverse area with a high population of people of Afro-Caribbean, Bangladeshi and Pakistani origin. Housing in Lozells consists mainly of terraced houses, which were constructed during the Industrial Revolution when the area became industrialised and the workers required housing. Kings Norton
Kings Norton, alternatively King's Norton, is an area of Birmingham, England. Historically in Worcestershire, it was also a Birmingham City Council ward within the Government of Birmingham, England. The district lies 6.5 miles south-southwest of Birmingham city centre and is within 1.5 miles of the north Worcestershire border. The Jewellery Quarter is an area of central Birmingham, UK, in the north-western area of Birmingham City Centre, with a population of around 19,000 people in a area. The Jewellery Quarter is Europe's largest concentration of businesses involved in the jewellery trade, which produces 40% of all the jewellery made in the UK. It is also home to the world's largest Assay Office, which hallmarks around 12 million items a year. Bordesley Green
Bordesley Green is an inner-city area of Birmingham, England about two miles east of the city centre. It also contains a road of the same name. It is in the Bordesley Green Ward which also covers some of Small Heath. Heartlands Hospital is located in the eastern part of Bordesley Green. The area is also served by Yardley Green Medical Centre and Omnia Practice. Kingfisher Country Park covers the River Cole recreation grounds which are partially covered by the area's boundaries. Four Oaks, Birmingham
Four Oaks is an affluent residential area in Sutton Coldfield, West Midlands, lying along the north and east borders of Sutton Park. Four Oaks is situated approximately north of Birmingham City Centre, and is bordered by Sutton Park, Streetly, Mere Green, Little Aston, Roughley and Aldridge. Four Oaks has a population of 21,690 as of 2004, and is part of the Sutton Four Oaks electoral ward. Bordesley, West Midlands
Bordesley is an area of Birmingham, England, south east of the city centre straddling the Watery Lane The Middleway, Middleway ring road. It should not be confused with nearby Bordesley Green. Commercial premises dominate to the west of the ring road, but much of this area is to be redeveloped. Blocks of residential apartments are planned and set for completion from the mid-2020s onwards.
