Paul Moravec
Paul Moravec (born November 2, 1957) is an American composer and a University Professor at Adelphi University on Long Island, New York and also a member of the composition department of the Mannes School of Music . Biography Moravec was born in Buffalo, New York, and subsequently attended the Lawrenceville School, graduating in 1975. He received his B.A. in composition from Harvard University in 1980; while there, he performed with the Harvard-Radcliffe Collegium Musicum, one of the Holden Choirs. The Letter (opera)
''The Letter'' is an opera by composer Paul Moravec and librettist Terry Teachout. It was commissioned by the Santa Fe Opera and was premiered there on 25 July 2009. The opera is based on ''The Letter (play), The Letter'', a 1927 play adapted by W. Somerset Maugham from one of his short stories. The play has been filmed twice. The first version, called ''The Letter (1929 film), The Letter'', was made in 1929 and starred Jeanne Eagels. The better-known 1940 version, also called ''The Letter (1940 film), The Letter'', starred Bette Davis and Herbert Marshall and was directed by William Wyler. The inspiration for Maugham's story and his subsequent play came from a Ethel Proudlock case, real-life event which took place in Kuala Lumpur in Federated Malay States, Malaya in April 1911. The Shining (opera)
''The Shining'' is an American opera in two acts and an epilogue, with music by composer Paul Moravec and a libretto by Mark Campbell, based on the 1977 novel by Stephen King. The opera received its world premiere on 7 May 2016 at the Ordway Music Theater, Saint Paul, Minnesota. It is part of the "New Works Initiative" of Minnesota Opera. Background and composition The idea for an opera based on the Stephen King novel originated with Eric Simonson, who directed the premiere production of the resulting work, and Minnesota Opera Artistic Director Dale Johnson. ''Tempest Fantasy'' is a 2003 chamber music composition in five movements for cello, clarinet, violin, and piano by the American composer Paul Moravec. The piece is dedicated to clarinetist David Krakauer and the piano trio Trio Solisti, who premiered the work May 2, 2003 at Morgan Library & Museum in New York City. The title of the work comes from the play '' The Tempest'' by William Shakespeare. The work won the 2004 Pulitzer Prize for Music.
