Blair Athol Coal Mine
The Blair Athol Coal Mine is a coal mine located in the Bowen Basin of Central Queensland, Australia. It is located over the former site of the township of Blair Athol. The mine has coal reserves amounting to 195 million tonnes of thermal coal, one of the largest coal reserves in Asia and the world. The mine has an annual production capacity of 12.9 million tonnes of coal. Coal was first discovered at this location in 1864 and has been mined from this area since this time by different companies. There are four seams, three notable for their thickness. Numbered from top to bottom, the seams are: No.1 seam — 7.5 m thick (and completely mined out), No.2 seam — only 1.2 m thick (and not mined), No.3 seam — average 29 m thick and up to 32 m in places (the focus of more recent operations), and No. 4 seam — 3 to 5 m thick (yet to be mined). Ensham Coal Mine
The Ensham Coal Mine is a coal mine located 40 km east of Emerald in Central Queensland, Australia. The mine has coal reserves amounting to 1.48 billion tonnes of coking coal, one of the largest coal reserves in Asia and the world. The Ensham mine has an annual production capacity of 2 million tonnes of coal. Ensham consists of six pits on either side of the Nogoa River. Operations currently utilise the open-cut method of mining. Extraction is conducted by dragline and truck and shovel operations. A transition to underground mining is required to access the highest quality coal. Coal is transported to port via the Blackwater railway system. Curragh Coal Mine
The Curragh Coal Mine is an open-cut, coal mine located 30 km north of Blackwater in Central Queensland, Australia. The mine has coal reserves amounting to 88 million tonnes of coking coal, one of the largest coal reserves in Asia and the world. The mine had an annual production capacity of 7 million tonnes of coal. The mine covers 12,600 ha of the Rangal Coal measures in the Bowen Basin. In 2012, production at the mine was increased to 8.5 million tonnes a year. Later in the year operations changed from seven days per week to five. Curragh Coal Mine was previously owned by Wesfarmers Resources and has an expected mine life to 2025. Overburden is removed by Thiess. Coppabella Coal Mine
The Coppabella Coal Mine is an open-cut coal mine located in Strathfield, Isaac Region, Central Queensland, Australia. It lies in the eastern part of the Bowen Basin near the towns of Nebo and Moranbah. The coal is dated to the Late Permian age and are located within the Rangal Coal Measures. The mine has coal reserves amounting to 227 million tonnes of coking coal, one of the largest coal reserves supplying Asia and the world. The mine has an annual production capacity of 4.2 million tonnes of coal. The average seam thickness of about ten metres. Carmichael Coal Mine
The Carmichael coal mine is a coal mine in Queensland, Australia which produced its first shipment of coal in December 2021. The mine has drawn criticism for its environmental impacts on the Great Barrier Reef, water usage and carbon emissions. Other contentious issues are its claimed economic benefits, financial viability and use of taxpayer funding. The mine was initially planned to produce 60 million tonnes of coal per year, however funding difficulties resulted in downsizing the planned mine to produce 10 million tonnes per year.
