Civil Defense Siren
A civil defense siren, also known as an air-raid siren or tornado siren, is a siren used to provide an emergency population warning to the general population of approaching danger. It is sometimes sounded again to indicate the danger has passed. Some sirens, especially within small towns, are also used to call the volunteer fire department when needed. Initially designed to warn city dwellers of air raids in World War II, they were later used to warn of nuclear attack and natural destructive weather patterns, such as tornadoes. The generalized nature of sirens led to many of them being replaced with more specific warnings, such as the broadcast-based Emergency Alert System and the Cell Broadcast-based Wireless Emergency Alerts and EU-Alert mobile technologies. Federal Signal Modulator
Federal Signal Modulators (also known as Modulator Speaker Arrays) are electronic warning devices produced by Federal Signal Corporation that are used to alert the public about tornadoes, severe weather, earthquakes, fires, lahars, tsunamis, or any other disaster. They are identified mostly by their distinctive stacked "flying saucer" design. The Modulator II is sold based on the more compact chassis of the siren compared to the original Modulators. General description The modulator is composed of speaker cells (ranging from two to eight, with the exception of seven) that contain four speaker drivers per cell, although two models (model 6032 and 6048) had additional drivers available when they were still produced. Modulators have an inactive (dummy) speaker cell on the bottom of the stack that is used to help project sound in all directions. SiraTone
SiraTone was a brand of electronic outdoor warning sirens produced by Federal Signal Corporation which began production in the early 1980s. These sirens were designed to broadcast high-intensity warning signals over a large area. SiraTone products are/were used for natural disaster notification, HAZMAT incident notification, fire call systems, and more. The SiraTone product line is no longer in production. The product line was succeeded by the Modulator and DSA (Directional Speaker Array) electronic outdoor warning sirens. Products Six models of outdoor warning sirens were produced under the SiraTone brand. Model numbers were designated by the lettering EOWS (Electronic Outdoor Warning Siren) and an asterisk, followed by a number representative of the respective siren's decibel output or speaker array setup. Sentry Siren, formerly known as Sterling Siren, is a civil defense siren brand. History Sentry Siren was founded as the Interstate Machine Products Company of Rochester, New York in the very early 20th century. The company would later rename itself to the Sterling Siren and Fire Alarm Company in 1925. The company began producing sirens in 1902, producing small scale vehicular sirens, before beginning large scale siren production with the Model M series of sirens beginning in 1912, designed by Merton C. Armstrong. The Model M was used in fire warning, air-raid warning, and disaster warning and ended production in the 1980s to make way for a new line of sirens. The units were noted for their durability; a 1917 Model M siren is still in use today by the Manchester, Michigan Fire Department. American Signal Corporation (ASC) is an outdoor warning siren and mass notification company in the United States. ASC was founded in 1942 as Biersach and Niedermeyer (B&N). After performing poorly, the company reformed as The Alerting Communicators of America (ACA) in 1967 and expanded the line of warning systems they produced. In 1992, ACA went bankrupt and was bought and reformed as the American Signal Corporation. History The company began as Biersach and Niedermeyer Co. in 1873 as a metal fabricating operation based in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. After the 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor, concerns surfaced that the public should be notified in the event of air attacks. Federal Signal 3T22
The Federal Signal 3T22 / 2T22 was a dual tone, mechanical outdoor warning siren made by Federal Signal Corporation (formerly Federal Sign and Signal Corporation) from 1952 through the early 1990s. It has a very recognizable design, having a ten-port rotor (chopper) on the bottom with ten cones (horns) and a 12-port one on top with twelve cones. History The Federal Signal 3T22 was originally designed as the 2T22 in 1952 or 1954. The 2T22 had the same number of ports and cones. It could produce two main signals (it could produce more but the other signals were rarely used), hence the name "2T22" (the 2 at front representing the 2 choppers, and the 22 representing the amount of horns). The siren had no solenoids, so it could not perform a "hi-lo" signal. In 1955, Federal designed the 3T22, which was similar, except for its name and that it had solenoids. Thunderbolt (siren)
The Thunderbolt is a discontinued mechanical outdoor warning siren made by Federal Signal Corporation. It has a very recognizable design, being a unidirectional siren with a large yellow (or other color based on buyer's choice) exponential horn. History The Thunderbolt siren was developed between 1949 and 1952. It was the first "supercharged" siren, which uses a supercharger to force air into the rotor, greatly increasing the siren's volume. In the 1980s, when civil defense fell into disuse, thunderbolts across the United States were repurposed for nuclear and storm warning siren systems. During the Gulf War, Federal sent a number of modified Thunderbolt 1003s to Kuwait to warn its citizens of an air raid. These were the system 7000 series and were only found in Kuwait.
