Choiseul District
Choiseul District is one of the 10 districts (formerly called quarter) of the Caribbean island nation of Saint Lucia. Located on the southwestern side of the island, the district is home to 6,130 people, according to the 2019 census. The seat of Choiseul District is the town of Choiseul. History The Choiseul District/Quarter was originally known as ''Anse Citron'', and an independent parish was established in 1765. In 1769 a census was done and recorded 75 whites, 25 free coloured, 512 negroes and 69 estates in Choiseul. However, most activity was originally in the River Dorée area, south-east of Choiseul. An Anglican church at River Dorée was built in 1846 and the first school was opened in 1848. The area was primarily run by English plantation owners and by the end of the 19th century the population was approximately 4,000. Praslin Quarter was a former quarter on the island nation of Saint Lucia. Since at least 2001, it has been a second-order subdivision of the Micoud District. The 2001 and 2010 Census show Praslin as part of the Micoud District. The population of Praslin is 341. Mon Repos, Saint Lucia
Mon Repos is a village on the island nation of Saint Lucia. It is located on the Atlantic Ocean coast of Saint Lucia, near Praslin, Micoud District. It contains many communities including Lumbard, Mamiku, La Pointe (including Paris Drive, Phiadel, Morne Bois-Den), Patience, Collie Town (Knockay Avenue), St. Marie, Vietnam, Malgretoute, Ryon, Piton. Local sites The village is the commercial center for these areas; housing a credit union, gas station, grocery and variety store, restaurants, a primary school, the St. Ann's Catholic Church and the Seventh Day Adventist Church which also has a primary school. Micoud District
Micoud District is one of 10 districts (formerly called quarters) of the Caribbean island nation of Saint Lucia The seat of this district is the town of Micoud inside this district. According to the 2002 census, the population of the district was 16,143 people. The final 2010 Census recorded a population of 16,284 in Micoud District. A former quarter, Praslin Quarter, was merged into Micoud Quarter. It was not enumerated separately in the 2010 Census. The 2001 Census shows Praslin as part of Micoud District. The Micoud District is divided into two electoral constituencies represented in the House of Assembly of Saint Lucia. The electoral constituencies has been represented since July 2021 by Jeremiah Norbert (Micoud North) and Allen Chastanet (Micoud South) as Parliamentary Representatives. Micoud, Saint Lucia
Micoud is a village of around 2,700 inhabitants on the south-east coast of Saint Lucia in the Micoud District. It was named after Baron de Micoud, who was the French governor of Saint Lucia in the 18th century. More recently it has been known as the home town and constituency seat of Sir John Compton, who was the premier of Saint Lucia from 1967 to 1979, then prime minister in 1979, and 1982 to 1996 and 2006 to 2007. Marigot Bay
Marigot Bay is located on the western coast of the Caribbean island country of Saint Lucia, 3.75 miles southwest from Castries and a short distance from the Saint Lucian National Marine Reserve. It is surrounded on three sides by steep, forested hills. History The inland portion of the bay forms a hurricane hole, used to shelter boats from hurricanes. Marigot Bay is a historic landmark, having been the site of a number of battles between the French and British navies. The bay was used as the setting for the 1967 film adaptation of Hugh Lofting's Doctor Dolittle books. Scenes of the shipwreck, Great Pink Sea Snail, and the construction of the harness for the Giant Lunar Moth were filmed in the bay. The American novelist James A. Laborie District is one of 10 districts (formerly quarters) of the Caribbean island nation of Saint Lucia. According to the 2002 census, the population of the Quarter was 7,414 people. The village of Laborie is located about south of Castries, the nation's capital. History The first inhabitants of the Laborie general area, migrating from South America around 1000 a.c., were probably the Arawak Amerindians. Laborie, a southwestern fishing village named after the French governor Baron De Laborie, was once a turtle habitat. French colonials were probably the first to settle what is now the village of Laborie, in the early 18th century. Laborie
Laborie is a village on the south coast of Saint Lucia. It was originally called l'Islet a Caret after the Loggerhead sea turtles that were found in the area. The name Laborie is named after Baron de Laborie who was the French governor of Saint Lucia from 1784–1789. At that time the village had a population of 712. Laborie is the seat of the Laborie District. History The French introduced large estates to the island and after the British took control of the island in 1814, many French landowners remained on their estates. In 1838 the first school was opened. Known as the "Mico School" because it was opened and operated by the Lady Mico Trust, it had 80 pupils and lasted until 1891. Gros Islet District
Gros Islet District, one of 10 first order subdivision (districts, formerly quarters) of the Caribbean island nation of Saint Lucia which includes the island's northernmost point, Cap Point and the notable Cap Estate, where the renowned St. Lucia Golf and Country Club is located. Whilst the town of Gros Islet is an important administrative centre, Rodney Bay is the main financial center of the district. History The Arawak and Carib artifacts found in Gros Islet District date back to around 1000 A.D. The pirate François Le Clerc, nicknamed Jambe de Bois because of his wooden leg, used Pigeon Island as a base to attack Spanish ships in the 1550s.
