Saint-Georges, French Guiana
Saint-Georges (sometimes unofficially called Saint-Georges-de-l'Oyapock) is a commune of French Guiana, an overseas region and department of France located in South America. It lies on the Oyapock River (which forms the border with Brazil), opposite the Brazilian town of Oiapoque. The town contains a town hall, a French Foreign Legion detachment, and some hotels (the main ones being Le Tamarin, Coz Calè and the Chez Modestine). Saint-Georges has been one of the three sub-prefectures of French Guiana and the seat of the Arrondissement of Saint-Georges since October 2022. Cacao, French Guiana
Cacao is a village in French Guiana, lying on the to the south of Cayenne. Most of the population are Hmong farmers, refugees from Laos who were resettled in French Guiana in 1977. The reasoning was that living, and working conditions were similar to their native land. As of 2007, the village had a population of 750 people. Overview The village is four blocks in size, with narrow streets. Local commercial outlets include restaurants, grocery and bread stores. There are two primary schools, but no secondary education facilities. Public buildings include an insect museum, a library, a church, and gendarmerie. There is also a Sunday morning market at which Hmong weaving, embroidery and food can be purchased. The main hotel in Cacao is L'Auberge des Orpailleurs. Boniville
Boniville (also Agoodé) is a village of Aluku Maroons in the commune of Papaïchton located on the Lawa River in French Guiana. History On 25 May 1891, the Aluku, a tribe of escaped slaves from Suriname, became French citizens, and Granman Ochi became the first officially recognized paramount chief of the tribe. In 1895, Ochi founded the village of Boniville to serve as the administrative centre for the tribe. In 1965, Granman Tolinga moved the capital from Boniville to Papaïchton, and as of 1993, Boniville is a village within the commune of Papaïchton. The village has lost its importance, and has been reduced to a small hamlet. Boniville is still characterised by traditional Aluku architecture with (painted and carved wood work). In 2017, five traditional houses in Boniville and Loca were restored by the National Forests Office. Bellevue, French Guiana
Bellevue is an Amerindian Kalina village in the commune of Iracoubo, French Guiana. Overview Bellevue is an Amerindian village on Route nationale 1, at a distance of eight kilometres from Iracoubo. The inhabitants originally lived in Grosse Roche on the Atlantic Ocean. In the 1950s, they were resettled in Bellevue. In the village, there are a couple of shops, however the nearest accommodations are in Iracoubo. The village has a school. Balaté
Balaté is a village of Lokono Amerindians in the commune of Saint-Laurent-du-Maroni at the confluence of the Maroni River and the Balaté River in French Guiana. Balata is a town in the commune of Matoury in French Guiana. It is located at the junction of RN1 and RN2, and started as a Haitian shanty town. History Balata is named after the nearby Balata Creek. It is located at the junction of RN1 and RN2 in Matoury. Haitian emigration to French Guiana started in the late 1960s, and accelerated from the late 1980s onwards. At first, they settled among the Haitians already living in Cayenne. Starting in 1995, shanty towns like Balata appeared on the outskirts of the urban area. Alikoto Tapele
Alikoto Tapele (formerly Alicoto) is an Amerindian village of the Wayampi tribe in southeast French Guiana, close to the border with Brazil. Alicoto was originally home to the chief of the Wayampis. The Wayampis in French Guiana traditionally had very little contact with the outside world, but in the 1940s, captain Eugène, the chief, did allow visits to Saint-Georges to purchase salt. In 1949, the population was 30, however the village was abandoned in 1971. The village was resettled by 2016 as Alikoto Tapele. Acarouany
Acarouany is a village in the Mana commune of Saint-Laurent-du-Maroni in French Guiana. Acarouany was the location of leper colony between 1833 and 1979. From 1989 until 1992, it was the location of a Surinamese refugee camp. The village is located on the . Leper colony In 1828, the Ministry of the Navy and Colonies sent Sister Anne-Marie Javouhey to Mana to colonize the area. Lepers up to then had been treated on the Salvation Islands. In 1833, Sister Javouhe set out to create a leprosarium south of the village of Mana on the Acarouany River. At first the patients were housed in straw huts, the construction of a leprosarium with brick buildings took three years. Between 1882 and 1886, the leprosarium was directed by Paul-Louis Simond. Awala-Yalimapo
Awala-Yalimapo () is a commune on the north coast of French Guiana, close to the border with Suriname. The seat of the commune is the settlement of Awala where the town hall is located. Other settlements in the commune are: Yalimapo, Ayawande, and Piliwa. The majority of the inhabitants are Kaliña Amerindian people. History The Kalina people have been living along the Maroni River since before the European colonization. In 1596, Lawrence Kemys noted that Iaremappo, a big village, was located near the mouth of the river.
