Chutney Music
Chutney music is a fusion genre of Indian folk music, specifically Bhojpuri folk music, with local Caribbean calypso and soca music, and later on Bollywood music. This genre of music that developed in Trinidad and Tobago is popular in Trinidad and Tobago, Guyana, Suriname, Jamaica, other parts of the Caribbean, Fiji, Mauritius, and South Africa. Chutney music emerged mid-20th century and reached a peak of popularity during the 1980s. Several sub-genres have developed. History This contemporary fusion of genres was created by Indo-Caribbean people whose ancestors were from the Hindi Belt. They were taken as indentured laborers by the British to replace slave laborers on sugar plantations after emancipation. Chutney music was established in the 1940s within temples, wedding houses, and cane fields of the Indo-Caribbean. Ravi Bissambhar
Ravi Bissambhar, also known as Ravi B, (; born October 27, 1982) is a Trinidadian chutney musician. Personal life Ravi Bissambhar, born to a musical family in Sangre Grande but currently lives Cunupia, Trinidad and Tobago, attended the Sangre Grande Hindu school, North Eastern College, University of the West Indies. His parents are of Bhojpuri Indian descent. Ravi started his singing career at the age of 13. At the age of 25 he was already the lead vocalist, music director, producer and arranger for his band Karma which was founded by him together with his brother Anil Bissambhar and his sister Nisha Bissambhar. He is also a radio personality with Trinidad and Tobago's Indian radio station, 90.5fm. Ravi B's love for music and singing took him to several countries. Ramdew Chaitoe
Ramdew Chaitoe (19 December 1942 - 6 June 1994) was a Surinamese artist and a harmonium player, who released a Baithak Gana album called ''The King Of Suriname a.k.a The Star Melodies of Ramdew Chaitoe in 1976''. Rumors exist about how Chaitoe started his career singing in jail after being arrested in a bar fight. Ramdew grew up on a farm. His father, songwriter/lyricist and harmonium instrumentalist Pundit Shastrie Sewpersad Chaitoe, was a considerable influence on Ramdew, inaugurating his son early in the musical art form, by having him perform weekly at Hindu temple ceremonies. This allowed the young Chaitoe to become skilled at his craft, thus allowing him to perform with the top singers and composers in Suriname as he matured. Throughout his travels in the Caribbean, Chaitoe acquired a strong reputation as a skilled harmonium player and singer. Rikki Jai
Rikki Jai (born Samraj Jaimungal; ) is an Indo-Trinidadian chutney music, chutney and chutney-soca musician. Career Jai's 1988 debut single ''Sumintra'' told the tale of an Indo-Trinidadian woman from Debe who informed her boyfriend of her preference for Soca music, soca over the music of Indian artist Lata Mangeshkar. Jai returned the following year with ''Pumping'', then ''Bolo'' and ''Show Me Yuh Motion''. His 1993 song ''Wine on a Bumsee'' signalled Jai's exit from the soca world, opting for the chutney soca arena, in which he continues to perform. Jai released ''Chutney Vibrations'', a compilation with soca chutney rhythms and his re-reading of the Juma. His most commercially successful release is ''Mor Tor'' featuring fellow Trinidadian soca star Machel Montano. Sundar Popo
Sundar Popo HBM, born Sundarlal Popo Bahora (; 4 November 1943 – 2 May 2000) was a Trinidadian and Tobagonian musician. He is credited as being the father of Chutney music, beginning with his 1969 hit ''Nana and Nani''. Early life Popo was born on 4 November 1943 in Monkey Town, Barrackpore, Trinidad and Tobago into a Hindu Indo-Trinidadian family. He grew up in a musical family. Drupatee Ramgoonai
Drupatee Ramgoonai (; born 2 March 1958) is an Trinidadian and Tobagonian chutney and chutney soca musician. She was responsible for coining the term "chutney soca" in 1987 with her first album, entitled ''Chutney Soca'', which included both English and Hindustani versions of the songs. She had her biggest hit the following year when her "(Roll Up the Tassa) Mr. Bissessar" was a Road March contender. She was instrumental in tassa and chutney soca finding its place in Carnival and her efforts later led to competitions such as Chutney Soca Monarch. Heeralal Rampartap
Heeralal Rampartap is an Indo-Trinidadian entertainer. He has repeatedly produced hits and has won numerous awards both locally and internationally. He is a three-time International Chutney Soca Monarch — in 1997, 2003 and 2005 – and the National Chutney Monarch of 2002 and 2003. He has also taken first place in the Indian Cultural Pageant for three consecutive years and won the first Tuco Chutney Monarch in 2005 followed by two further wins in 2006, 2007 and 2008. He received the National Humming Bird Silver Medal for Culture in Trinidad and Tobago in 2005. Adesh Samaroo
Adesh Samaroo is a Trinidadian chutney soca singer born in Tacarigua in central Trinidad. He gained notice on the local scene in late 2002 with his song "Rum Till I Die" from the album of the same name. His second release, entitled "Caroni Close Down", played upon the fact that the local sugar cane company, Caroni (1975) Ltd. had recently been shut down. After the success of his third single, "Rajin Jheem Jheem Joom" Samaroo began performing abroad. Samaroo won the National Chutney Monarch in 2004. The same year, he performed with late Indian performer Kanchan. Samaroo has won a total of eleven awards at the 103 FM Music Awards, six in 2004 and five in 2005. Laxmichand "Babla" Virji Shah and Kumari Kanchan Dinkarrao Mali-Shah were an Indian husband-wife musical group best known for work in the chutney music and Desi Folk music genres. They performed together for forty years until Kanchan died in 2004. Babla Shah is the younger brother of famous music director duo Kalyanji Anandji. Rakesh Yankaran, nicknamed ''The Raja'' (; born 03 December 1959) is an Indo-Trinidadian musician. He is the son of the late Indian classical musician, Isaac Yankarran and brother of the late Indian classical and chutney musicians Anand, Suresh, and Sharm Yankaran.
