Balzac And The Little Chinese Seamstress (film)
''Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress'' (; french: Balzac et la Petite Tailleuse Chinoise) is a 2002 Franco-Chinese romance drama film with dialogue in the Sichuan dialect directed by Dai Sijie and starring Zhou Xun, Chen Kun and Liu Ye. It premiered at the 2002 Cannes Film Festival on 16 May. Based on the 2000 semi-autobiographical novel of the same title by Dai, the film revolves around two young Chinese boys of bourgeois background who were sent to a remote village in Sichuan province for three years of re-education during the Cultural Revolution. They both fell in love with a beautiful local girl, granddaughter of an old tailor and known to everyone as the Little Seamstress. During those years of intellectual oppression, the three found solace and liberation in a collection of banned translated novels by Western authors, among whom their favourite was Balzac. Yuan Quan (, born 16 October 1977), also known as Yolanda Yuan, is a Chinese actress and singer. She graduated from the Central Academy of Drama where she majored in drama. Career Yuan starred in her first film '' Rhapsody of Spring'' (1998), which won her the Golden Rooster Award for Best Supporting Actress. Liu Bingjian (born October 16, 1963, in Anhui) is a Chinese film director who emerged on the cinema scene in the late 1990s with his LGBT-themed film ''Men and Women''. Career Originally trained as a painter, Liu attended the prestigious Beijing Film Academy where he studied cinematography. Upon graduation, he switched to directing and worked in television before making his first film ''Inkstone'' which failed to be screened either in China or abroad. In 1999, he directed the underground LGBT film '' Men and Women''. Though the film was banned in China, it was seen as a rare example of a Chinese film to treat homosexuality as an everyday occurrence. Liu followed up ''Men and Women'' with '' Cry Woman'' in 2002.
