First-class Cricket
First-class cricket, along with List A cricket and Twenty20 cricket, is one of the highest-standard forms of cricket. A first-class match is one of three or more days' scheduled duration between two sides of eleven players each and is officially adjudged to be worthy of the status by virtue of the standard of the competing teams. Matches must allow for the teams to play two innings each, although in practice a team might play only one innings or none at all. The etymology of "first-class cricket" is unknown, but it was used loosely before it acquired official status in 1895, following a meeting of leading English clubs. At a meeting of the Imperial Cricket Conference (ICC) in 1947, it was formally defined on a global basis. A significant omission of the ICC ruling was any attempt to define first-class cricket retrospectively. Murray Baker
Murray Baker (born 21 April 1946) is a New Zealand thoroughbred racehorse trainer and former New Zealand cricketer. Cricket Baker played in one List A and seventeen first-class matches for Central Districts and Northern Districts from 1966 to 1975. Baker was part of the team who won the Plunket Shield and played for Huddersfield in England. Horse training Baker started training at Woodville in the 1970s. His first raceday winner was Vizier on October 4 1978, at Otaki. Another early winner was Sir Vigilant in the 1985 New Zealand St. Leger. In 2000 Murray moved his training operation to Cambridge. Don Beard
Donald Derek Beard (14 January 1920 – 15 July 1982) was a New Zealand cricketer who played in four Tests from 1952 to 1956. Early life and career Don Beard grew up in the country near Palmerston North, cycling 15 miles a day to attend Palmerston North Boys' High School. After teacher training in Auckland, he attended Victoria University in Wellington, from where he completed a Diploma in Education in 1946 and a Master of Arts in 1948. His thesis was on the history of physical education in New Zealand primary schools. An accurate fast-medium bowler and useful lower-order batsman, Beard was selected to make his first-class debut for Wellington in the first round of Plunket Shield matches after the Second World War in December 1945, but he had not fully recovered from burns he had received while fighting a fire, and was replaced by Ray Buchan. Gary Bartlett
Gary Alex Bartlett (born 3 February 1941) is a former New Zealand cricketer. He played 10 Test matches for New Zealand in the 1960s as a fast bowler. Domestic career Bartlett made his first-class debut for Central Districts in the 1958–59 season aged only 17, and played all four matches for New Zealand in the non-Test series against an Australian XI in the following season. ''Wisden'' described him as "the real discovery of the season". The Australian captain, Ian Craig, described facing him in the first match of the series in Wellington: "I saw Bartlett let go of the ball, but the first I knew of where it had gone was the sound of it hitting the gloves yards behind me. Geoffrey Edward Fulton Barnett (born 3 February 1984) is a Canadian and New Zealand cricket player who plays first-class cricket for the New Zealand Central Districts. Barnett is a left-handed opening batsman who scored his maiden first-class century in his twelfth match, making 136 for Canada against Kenya in their Intercontinental Cup game in August which Canada won by 25 runs. Brady Barnett
Brady Barnett (born 18 November 1989) is a New Zealand former first-class cricketer who played for Wellington and Central Districts. Career Barnett played for Nelson (-2012), Saintfield (2012), Wellington (2013-2016) and Central Districts. He also played in the Netherlands for VRA Amsterdam in 2015. Colin Barclay
Colin Walter Barclay (21 January 1937 – 8 April 2009) was a New Zealand cricketer. He was a right-handed batsman and a right-arm medium-pace bowler who played for Central Districts. He was born in Wellington. Barclay made a single first-class appearance, during the 1955–56 season, against Otago. He scored six runs in the only innings in which he batted, and conceded 21 runs from five overs. He later played for Taranaki in the Hawke Cup. He was a member of the Taranaki team that beat Southland to claim the Cup in December 1970 and then held the Cup for two seasons. His father Wally played for Wellington in the 1920s. Trevor Barber
Richard Trevor Barber (3 June 1925 – 7 August 2015) was a New Zealand cricketer who played in one Test in 1956, against the West Indies in Wellington. Life and career Barber was born in Ōtaki, on the Kāpiti Coast north of Wellington, where his family had a dairy farm. He attended Wellington College as a boarder. A middle-order batsman, Barber played for Wellington from 1945–46 to 1958–59, and for Central Districts in 1959–60. He scored his only century, 117, against Otago in Wellington in 1953–54, which was also one of the two Plunket Shield matches in which he kept wicket. He captained Wellington in 1950-51 and 1951–52, and from 1955–56 to 1957–58, and Central Districts in 1959–60. Wellington won the Shield under his captaincy in 1956–57.
