A castle is a type of fortified structure built during the Middle Ages predominantly by the nobility or royalty and by military orders. Scholars debate the scope of the word ''castle'', but usually consider it to be the private fortified residence of a lord or noble. This is distinct from a palace, which is not fortified; from a fortress, which was not always a residence for royalty or nobility; from a ''pleasance'' which was a walled-in residence for nobility, but not adequately fortified; and from a fortified settlement, which was a public defence – though there are many similarities among these types of construction. Bäckaskog 1
Bäckaskog is a locality situated in Kristianstad Municipality, Skåne County, Sweden, between Ivö Lake and Oppmanna Lake, with 293 inhabitants in 2010. The village has developed around the castle and the Premonstratensian monastery. The monastery was constructed in the early 14th century and after the destruction of the monastery in Vä, the monks from there were moved to Bäckaskog. With the Danish Reformation, the monastery was turned into a castle and rewarded to Danish noblemen of the families Ulfstand, Brahe, Bille, Parsberg and eventually the Scanian family of . The castle was also owned by Swedish king Charles XV and crown-prince Fredrik of Denmark between 1885 and 1900. It was here in 1805 that a treaty was signed between England and Sweden, whereby Sweden joined the war against Napoleon. Bjärsjölagård Castle
Bjärsjölagård Castle ( sv, Bjärsjölagård slott) is a former mansion in Sjöbo Municipality, Scania, Sweden. History The main building from 1766 and the north wing from 1777 are in Rococo architectural style. They were designed by architect Jean Eric Rehn (1717-1793). The south wing dates from 1812 and was designed in Empire style. Since 1958, the manor has functioned as a conference facility and has been a popular place for weddings and other gatherings. Bjärsjöholm Castle or Bjersjöholm Castle ( sv, italic=yes, Bjärsjoholm slott or ''Bjersjöholm slott'') is a manor dating from the 16th century, northwest of Ystad in Scania, Sweden. Originally consisting of four brick buildings built around a courtyard, the present manor consists of two buildings. To the north is the original Renaissance style manor from 1576, built by Björn Kaas. It was abandoned due to settlements. A new manor was designed by Ferdinand Meldahl Ferdinand Meldahl (16 March 1827 – 3 February 1908) was a Danish architect best known for the reconstruction of Frederiksborg Castle after the fire in 1859. Småland () is a historical province () in southern Sweden. Småland borders Blekinge, Scania, Halland, Västergötland, Östergötland and the island Öland in the Baltic Sea. Bergkvara is a manor house and ruined castle (''slottsruin''), located at the north beach of Bergkvarasjön ("the Bergkvara Lake") in Växjö, Sweden, and described in ''Nordisk familjebok'' as "one of Sweden's oldest mansions in Värend, Bergunda and Öjaby parishes, Kinnevalds district and Kronoberg County, 6 km. west of Växjö". History Bergkvara, a former "ornamental landscape", was bought by the Trolle family in the 15th century and rebuilt as a stone castle in the 1470s by Arvid Trolle. The castle was originally surrounded by two moats, serving as a system of defense.
