A list of films produced by the Hindi film industry based in Bombay in 1931: 1931 1931 was a ground-breaking year for Indian cinema. The first Hindi Talkie Alam Ara was released on 14 March 1931 in Mumbai's Majestic Cinema. The film was produced by Imperial Movietone and directed by Ardeshir Irani. It starred Master Vithal, Zubeida, Prithviraj Kapoor and Wazir Mohammed Khan. The first song to be sung in films was by Wazir Mohammed Khan for Alam Ara, "De De Khuda Ke Naam Par" under the music direction of Firozeshah Mistry. This year saw the release of 207 silent films from all over India and 28 Talkies. Out of the 28 talkies 23 were in Hindi, 3 in Bengali, one in Tamil, and one in Telugu. Hindi cinema, popularly known as Bollywood and formerly as Bombay cinema, refers to the film industry based in Mumbai, engaged in production of motion pictures in Hindi language. Madan Theatre Company, also known as Madan Theatres Limited or Madan Theatres in short, was a film production company founded by Jamshedji Framji Madan, one of the pioneers of Indian Cinema. History Madan, a young Parsi businessman, who had experience in Theatre shows from an early age, stepped into entertainment business in 1902, when he started bioscope shows of imported cinemas a tent in Maidan, Calcutta. After World War I, Madan's Theatre business started growing rapidly. In 1919, his business became a joint stock company with the name of Madan Theatres Limited. Madan Theatres and its associates had a great control over theatre houses in India those days. J J Madan, third son of Jamshedji Framji Madan, became managing director of Madan Theatres after the death of his father in 1923. Nanubhai Vakil
Nanubhai Vakil (23 May 1902 – 29 December 1980) was a Hindi and Gujarati film director. He was the first to make a Gujarati talkie film with a biopic on the saint Narsinh Mehta in 1932. ''Narsinh Mehta's'' (1932) star cast included the actress Mehtab. Career Vakil frequently collaborated with Zubeida and Patience Cooper. Lakshmi (; , sometimes spelled Laxmi, ), also known as Shri (, ), is one of the principal goddesses in Hinduism. Jilloo was an Indian Hindi language film actress born in 1905 in Bombay, India as Zuleka Ebrahain. She acted in ''Mother India'' and ''Mughal-e-Azam'', the two biggest commercial and critical successes of the 1950s. She also acted in many movies also, but in very small roles. Prafulla Chandra Ghosh (24 December 1891 – 18 December 1983) was the first Premier of West Bengal, India from 15 August 1947 to 14 August 1948. He also served as the Chief Minister of West Bengal in the "Progressive Democratic Alliance Front" government from 2 November 1967 to 20 February 1968.
