Like all municipalities of Puerto Rico, Río Grande is subdivided into administrative units called barrios, which are, in contemporary times, roughly comparable to minor civil divisions. The barrios and subbarrios, in turn, are further subdivided into smaller local populated place areas/units called sectores (''sectors'' in English). Río Grande, Puerto Rico
Río Grande () is a town and municipality of Puerto Rico located on the eastern edge of the Northern Coastal Valley, north of Las Piedras, Naguabo and Ceiba; east of Loíza and Canóvanas and west of Luquillo. Río Grande is spread over eight barrios and Río Grande Pueblo (the downtown area and the administrative center of the city). It is part of the San Juan-Caguas-Guaynabo Metropolitan Statistical Area. A big portion of El Yunque National Forest, including El Yunque's peak, is located within the municipality. History Río Grande was founded on July 16, 1840, by Desiderio and Quilimaco Escobar, with the approval of Governor Miguel López. Jiménez is a barrio in the municipality of Río Grande, Puerto Rico. Its population in 2010 was 2,925. History Puerto Rico was ceded by Spain in the aftermath of the Spanish–American War under the terms of the Treaty of Paris of 1898 and became an unincorporated territory of the United States. Río Grande Barrio-pueblo
Río Grande barrio-pueblo is a barrio and the administrative center (seat) of Río Grande, a municipality of Puerto Rico. Its population in 2010 was 1,772. As was customary in Spain, in Puerto Rico, the municipality has a barrio called ''pueblo'' which contains a central plaza, the municipal buildings (city hall), and a Catholic church. Fiestas patronales (patron saint festivals) are held in the central plaza every year. Palmer (officially Sector Palmer) is a small settlement and sector in the barrio Mameyes II of Río Grande, Puerto Rico. Overview Located by highway PR-3, Sector Palmer is the closest settlement to El Yunque National Forest. The sector has a United States Post Office, a community center, stores and various establishments catering to both residents and visitors to the nearby rainforest. ''El Portalito Hub'', a temporary visitors center to El Yunque, opened in the neighborhood in 2019. El Portal Rainforest Center, located within the national forest, is currently closed for renovation after being damaged by Hurricane Maria in 2017.
