The Bureau International de l'Edition Mécanique (BIEM), also known as Bureau International des Sociétés Gérant les Droits d'Enregistrement et de Reproduction Mécanique, is an organisation coordinating statutory licence agreements among different countries. It administers mechanical rights, ensuring payment of royalties to the creators of musical, literary and dramatic work), which may be reproduced on a CD or DVD, or through digital means, such as downloads from the Internet. The members of mechanical rights societies are composers, authors and publishers. Founded in 1929, BIEM is based in Neuilly-sur-Seine, France, and represents 53 societies, from 58 countries. Its role is to aid collaboration between member societies and to assist in solving problems arising among individual members and/or user groups. The Gesellschaft für musikalische Aufführungs- und mechanische Vervielfältigungsrechte (GEMA; "Society for musical performing and mechanical reproduction rights") is a government-mandated collecting society and performance rights organization based in Germany, with administrative offices in Berlin and Munich. GEMA represents the usage rights stemming from authors' rights (e.g., mechanical licensing, broadcast licensing, synchronization licensing) for the musical works of those composers, lyricists, and publishers who are members in the organization. It is the only such institution in Germany and a member of BIEM and CISAC. The Mechanical-Copyright Protection Society (MCPS) is an organisation that collects royalties and protects rights for music publisher, song writer and composer members, when their music is reproduced, in any format – including online, physical and synchronised. The MCPS collects and pays royalties to members when their music is: * copied and used in physical products (such as records, CDs and DVDs) * streamed or downloaded on services such as Spotify, Apple Music, Netflix and Amazon * synchronised into audio-visual entertainment including TV, film, video games and advertising * on radio. The Society of Authors ZAiKS ( pl, Stowarzyszenie Autorów ZAiKS, where the acronym stands for the Society′s original founding name, ''Society of Authors and Stage Composers'', pl, Związek Autorów i Kompozytorów Scenicznych or ''ZAiKS''), established 1918, was for many years the sole legal Polish copyright collective, and has remained the dominant one, following the loss of its ''de facto'' government-granted monopoly in 1995 as a result of entry into force of the new copyright law of Poland. BUMA/STEMRA are two private organisations in the Netherlands, the Buma Association (Dutch: ''Vereniging Buma'') and the Stemra Foundation (Dutch: ''Stichting Stemra'') that operate as one single company that acts as the Dutch collecting society for composers and music publishers. History The Buma Association was set up by Dutch music authors and publishers in 1913, one year after the Dutch Copyright Act was passed. In 1936, with the arrival of the gramophone record, the replication of music multiplied. Realising its impact, the members of the Buma Association created the Stemra Foundation, which focuses on the replication of recorded works of music, ranging from LPs to CDs to Internet and mobile phones. It was founded in 1939 as a nonprofit organization, and is the largest musical copyright administration society in Japan. Overview JASRAC's main business activity is to act as trustee of copyright rights such as recording and performing rights for songwriters, lyricists, and music publishers. It manages licensing to music users, collects license fees, and distributes the same to the rights holders. It also supervises copyright infringements and prosecutes infringers.
