Azerbaijanis (; az, Azərbaycanlılar, ), Azeris ( az, Azərilər, ), or Azerbaijani Turks ( az, Azərbaycan Türkləri, ) are a Turkic people living mainly in northwestern Iran and the Republic of Azerbaijan. Chingiz Mustafayev (singer)
Chingiz Mustafayev ( az, Çingiz Mustafayev; born 11 March 1991) is an Azerbaijani singer, songwriter, and guitarist. He represented Azerbaijan in the Eurovision Song Contest 2019 with the song "Truth", finishing in eighth place. Early life Mustafayev was born in Moscow and moved to his parents' native Qazax, Azerbaijan when he was six years old. He learned to play the guitar and started composing his own songs while still a young boy. Career At age 13, he moved with his mother and his brother to Baku where he auditioned for the Azerbaijani version of ''Pop Idol'' in 2007. Mustafayev won the competition, and soon became a rising star in the Azerbaijani music industry. In 2013, he represented Azerbaijan internationally in the '' New Wave'' competition in Jūrmala, Latvia. He placed 11th overall and sang along with Polina Gagarina. Huseyngulu Sarabski ( az, Hüseynqulu Sarabski), born Hüseynqulu Malik oğlu Rzayev (20 March 1879 – 16 February 1945), was an Azerbaijani opera singer (tenor), composer, playwright, stage actor, theatre director, and musician (tar). Early life Sarabski was born to poor parents in Baku (then part of the Russian Empire, now capital of Azerbaijan) on Nowruz Eve. At a young age, he was sent to a mullah to study the Koran. Unable to overcome the language barrier and having received severe beatings from the mullah, Huseyngulu managed to convince his parents to let him quit. In 1891, at the age 12, he watched a theatrical performance for the first time. It was staged by amateur actors and called ''Khan Sarabi'' adapted from Mirza Fatali Akhundov's play ''Sarguzasht-i vazir-i Khan-i Lankaran''. Asya Sultanova
Asya Bakhish Sultanova (16 October 1923 – 22 November 2021) was an Azerbaijani composer who is best known for her works for children and her collaboration with singer Muslim Magomayev. Biography Sultanova was born in Baku. Her father was a geologist, and her mother was an English teacher. She studied at the Azerbaijan Conservatory from 1942 to 1944, and at the Moscow Conservatory, where she graduated in 1950. She remained in Moscow after graduating and lived there until her death. Her teachers included Evgeny Golubev and Vissarion Shebalin, who encouraged her to incorporate Azerbaijani folk tunes in her music. She was also mentored by Azerbaijani composer Kara Karaev. Sultanova married, then divorced, musician and actor Vladimir Shainsky. She presented recitals throughout the Soviet Union, and worked at a film studio. She first heard Muslim Magomayev sing in 1963. Arif Malikov
Arif Malikov (also Melikov; Baku, 13 September 1933 – Baku, 9 May 2019) was an Azerbaijani composer. He graduated from the Baku Conservatory as a music composer in 1958. He shot to fame in 1961 when his first major composition " Legend of Love" was staged at the Kirov State Academic Theatre of Opera and Ballet in Leningrad (present day St Petersburg) and received nationwide acclaim. The ballet has been staged in several countries in Europe and is regarded as one of the finest works emerging from the former Soviet Union. The ballet " Legend of Love", is based upon the legend of " Farhad and Shirin", a story of unrequited love that was immortalized by Turkish poet Nazim Hikmet. Jahangir Shirgasht oglu Jahangirov (Azerbaijani: ; 20 July 1921 – 25 March 1992) was a Soviet and Azerbaijani composer, conductor and choirmaster; he was named People's Artists of the Azerbaijan SSR in 1964.
