This is a list of Australian produced music television shows. Early days of music television pre-dated video clips, and included variety style series, miming series, and pop series, and with the advent of music videos, shows gave way to slickly prepackaged film clips with a host compère mixing live local acts (e.g. ''Countdown''). The most recent trend has been towards near and complete compère-free shows which show music videos exclusively (e.g. '' Rage'' and '' AMV''). Talent quests and competitions are shown in the second table below. Ernie Sigley
Ernest William Sigley (2 September 1938 – 15 August 2021) was an Australian television host, comedian, variety performer, radio presenter and singer. Known as a pioneer of radio and television in Australian, he was often styled as a "little Aussie battler" with a larrikin sense of humour. Sigley started his career in radio, before becoming a presenter of TV programs and was best known for his self-titled program ''The Ernie Sigley Show'' and ''Saturday Night Live'' as well as original host of game show ''Wheel of Fortune'', after presenting talk shows with his frequent co-presenter Denise Drysdale in the late 80s and early 90s, he returned to presenting radio broadcasts, until retiring in 2009. The series starred pianist Eunice Gardiner, who on the series played the piano and interviewed personalities in music. The series aired on Sundays, broadcast in a 30-minute time-slot at 5:30PM. GTV (Australia)
GTV is a commercial television station in Melbourne, Australia, owned by the Nine Network. The station is currently based at studios at 717 Bourke Street, Docklands. History GTV-9 was amongst the first television stations to begin regular transmission in Australia. Test transmissions began on 27 September 1956, introduced by former 3DB radio announcer Geoff Corke, based at the Mount Dandenong transmitter, as the studios in Richmond were not yet ready. The station covered the 1956 Summer Olympics which Melbourne hosted., the 1956 Carols By Candlelight and the Davis Cup tennis as part of its test transmissions. The station was officially opened on 19 January 1957 by Victorian Governor Sir Dallas Brooks from the studios in Bendigo Street, Richmond. The Astor Show
''The Astor Show'' was an Australian television series which aired in 1958 on Melbourne station GTV-9. In the series, the cast danced to and mimed hit recordings (a mix of contemporary and older hits). The series ended with the 31 August 1958 broadcast. The timeslot of the series was then occupied for several weeks by a series of specials starring Shirley Abicair, and later by an American drama series. Synopsis The format of the series was very similar to ''Hit Parade'', which debuted earlier and aired on rival station HSV-7. Series consisting of the cast lip-syncing other artists songs were not uncommon on the early Australian television, but eventually vanished, likely rendered obsolete by the likes of ''Six O'Clock Rock'' and ''The Bobby Limb Show'' in the late-1950s. ''Ardath Hit Parade'' is an Australian television series which aired on Sydney station ATN-7 from 1958 to 1959. Originally hosted by Keith Walshe, it was later hosted by Jimmy Parkinson. It was a spin-off from ''Sydney Tonight'', and had been a segment of that series prior to becoming a series of its own. The series presented the top 10 songs of the week. Guest singers and groups appeared on the series from time to time. It should not be confused with Melbourne-produced series ''Hit Parade'' (in which hit recordings were lip-synced by a recurring cast in sets and costumes), which was shown in Sydney on TCN-9. ''TV Disc Jockey'' was an early Australian television music program which is notable as it later evolved to become the Australian version of ''Bandstand''. It aired on the Nine Network's TCN-9 from June 1957 to February 1958. The series originally consisted of host John Godson playing records (with the visual consisting of the record going round), later a live band joined and then the series began to accompany the records by inviting young people into the studio to dance to the music. In 1958 it changed its title to '' Accent on Youth''. ''Melody Time'' was an early Australian music television series that aired in 1957 on Melbourne station ABV-2. The live show was hosted by singer Ormonde Douglas, who also made guest appearances on other Australian television series of the era. In 1959 the series aired again for an additional series of six episodes. The first of the 1959 episodes also featured soprano Maureen Boyce and pianist Wendy Pomroy. It is not known how many episodes still exist, given station practices of the era. Choice Of The People
''Choice of the People'' is an Australian daytime television series which aired on Sydney television station ATN-7 from 25 November 1957 to 3 October 1958. It was replaced on the schedule by '' Melody with Milton'' (1958-1960), which featured the same host. Broadcast at 2:00PM on several weekdays each week, the series was hosted by Milton Saunders and featured music requested by viewers with Saunders playing requested songs on the piano and organ. The series was an early example of daytime television in Australia. On the Friday that the final episode aired, the broadcasting day of the station began at 1:30PM with U.S. comedy series '' The Ray Milland Show''. By comparison, TCN-9 offered only the audio of music during that time of the day, with their first program on the day's schedule not airing until 5:00PM.
