Oil Sands
Oil sands, tar sands, crude bitumen, or bituminous sands, are a type of unconventional petroleum deposit. Oil sands are either loose sands or partially consolidated sandstone containing a naturally occurring mixture of sand, clay, and water, soaked with bitumen, a dense and extremely viscous form of petroleum. Significant bitumen deposits are reported in Canada, Kazakhstan, Russia, and Venezuela. The estimated worldwide deposits of oil are more than ; the estimates include deposits that have not been discovered. Proven reserves of bitumen contain approximately 100 billion barrels, and total natural bitumen reserves are estimated at worldwide, of which , or 70.8%, are in Alberta, Canada. Crude bitumen is a thick, sticky form of crude oil, so viscous that it will not flow unless heated or diluted with lighter hydrocarbons such as light crude oil or natural-gas condensate. Rising Tide North America is a grassroots network of groups and individuals in North America organizing action against the root causes of climate change. They work towards and promote local, community-based solutions to the climate crisis. Rising Tide is an international network dedicated to building a climate justice and anti-extraction movement. Georg Naumann
Kurt Georg Naumann (1901–1978) was a German scientist, trapper and pioneer of the early local exploration and use of oil wells and natural gas deposits in the northern catchment area of Athabasca River in Canada. Biography Georg Naumann was the eldest son of the Radeberg factory worker August Otto Naumann (1874–1922) and his wife Anna, née Berger (1876–1966), who had another five children (four sons and one daughter). After the early death of his father, the responsibility for the supporting of the family fell on Georg's – the eldest son's – shoulders. Andrew Nikiforuk (born 1955) is a Canadian journalist and author. His writing has appeared in many outlets, including '' Saturday Night'', ''Maclean's'', ''Alberta Views'', ''Alternatives Journal'', and national newspapers. He has won multiple National Magazine Awards for his work. In 1990, the ''Toronto Star'' awarded him an Atkinson Fellowship in Public Policy to study AIDS and the failure of public health policy. Nikolai Kudryavtsev
Nikolai Alexandrovich Kudryavtsev (russian: Николай Александрович Кудрявцев; Opochka, October 21, 1893 – Leningrad, December 12, 1971) was a Soviet Russian petroleum geologist. He is the founding father of modern abiogenic theory for origin of petroleum, which states that some petroleum is formed from non-biological sources of hydrocarbons located deep in the Earth's crust and mantle. He graduated from Leningrad Mining Institute in 1922, obtained a Dr.Sc. in Geology and Mineralogy in 1936, and become professor in 1941. Kudryavtsev started his geological career in 1920 at the USSR Geological Committee. In 1929-1971 he worked for All-Union Geological Research Institute (VNIGRI). Micheal George Henry Hudema is a Canadian activist who has worked for advocacy organizations including Greenpeace, Global Exchange, the University of Alberta Students' Union, and the Ruckus Society. He is best known for his work opposing the development of the Alberta oil sands and reliance on fossil fuels in general, but has also engaged in civil liberties and student activism. Thomas Homer-Dixon (born 1956) is a Canadian political scientist and author who researches threats to global security. He is the founder and Executive Director of the Cascade Institute at Royal Roads University in Victoria, British Columbia. He is the author of seven books, the most recent being ''Commanding Hope: The Power We Have to Renew a World in Peril''. Tony Clarke (born 1944) is a Canadian activist. Biography Clarke grew up in Chilliwack, British Columbia, graduating from Chilliwack Senior Secondary School in 1962. He was class president. He studied at the University of British Columbia and did graduate work at the University of Chicago, obtaining a PhD in the history of religion. He presented a dissertation titled ''The Color Line and the American Metropolis: A Search for a Form of Ministry in the Aftermath of the Civil Rights Movement in Chicago'' (1974). After Chicago, he worked for the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops for 21 years, serving as Director of Social Policy. Yinka Dene Alliance
The Yinka Dene Alliance is a coalition of six First Nations from northern British Columbia, organized to prevent the Enbridge Northern Gateway Pipelines being built through their traditional territories. The coalition first comprised the Nadleh Whut'en, Nak'azdli, Takla Lake, Saik'uz and Wet'suwet'en First Nations. The Tl'azt'en First Nation has since joined. These bands represent the interests of around 5,000 aboriginals. They are utilizing indigenous, Canadian and international law, and organizing various public protests across Canada. Opposition to Enbridge Northern Gateway Pipelines The Northern Gateway project is a proposal by Enbridge Inc. to build a twin pipeline between Bruderheim, Alberta and Kitimat, British Columbia. Wabasco Oil Sands
Wabasca is an oil field in a remote area of northern Alberta, Canada. It is the fourth largest deposit of oil sands located in Alberta, located southwest of the larger Athabasca oil sands deposit. It is also known as the ''Pelican Lake Oilfield''. The closest community is Wabasca. The field is located east of this hamlet, and is spread over a surface of approximately of boreal forest and muskeg. Most oil is produced from the Wabiskaw Sandstone, formation equivalent to the one excavated in the Athabasca Oil Sands, but from sub-surface. While services are located in the nearby hamlet of Wabasca, the oil field is also served by the Pelican Airport. Most interests in this area are owned by Canadian Natural Resources, who purchased Cenovus Energy's operations in the area in 2017.
