List Of Archosaurs Of The Chinle Formation
The Chinle Formation is an Upper Triassic continental geologic formation in the western United States which has yielded fossils of many archosaurs: a group of vertebrates that includes crocodiles, pterosaurs, dinosaurs (including birds), and other extinct relatives. This is a list of all archosaurs from the formation, including suchians (crocodilian relatives) and avemetatarsalians (dinosaurs, pterosaurs, and their relatives), as well as the abundant crocodilian-like phytosaurs, which may either be true archosaurs or very close relatives of Archosauria. Chinle Formation
The Chinle Formation is an Upper Triassic continental geological formation of fluvial, lacustrine, and palustrine to eolian deposits spread across the U.S. states of Nevada, Utah, northern Arizona, western New Mexico, and western Colorado. In New Mexico, it is often raised to the status of a geological group, the Chinle Group. Some authors have controversially considered the Chinle to be synonymous to the Dockum Group of eastern Colorado and New Mexico, western Texas, the Oklahoma panhandle, and southwestern Kansas. Calyptosuchus
''Calyptosuchus'' (meaning "covered crocodile") is an extinct genus of aetosaur from the Late Triassic of North America. Like other aetosaurs, it was heavily armored and had a pig-like snout used to uproot plants. Description ''Calyptosuchus'' was estimated to have been four metres long, or possibly larger, with a maximum carapace width of almost seventy centimetres. The osteoderms were not entirely fused. Each row of the osteoderms corresponded to one vertebra, and comprised four dorsal osteoderms. Two small squarish osteoderms formed the outside of the row (about 10 by 10 cm), and two much broader osteoderms (approximately 20 by 10 cm) formed the inside of the row and covered most of the back. Desmatosuchinae
Desmatosuchinae is a major subfamily of aetosaurs within the clade Desmatosuchia. It is a stem-based taxon defined as all aetosaurs more closely related to ''Desmatosuchus'' than to ''Stagonolepis,'' ''Aetosaurus'', or '' Paratypothorax''. The clade Desmatosuchinae has often been restricted to a few closely-related aetosaurs with spiny armor, such as ''Desmatosuchus'', ''Longosuchus'', and ''Lucasuchus''. It was later expanded to include a number of ''Stagonolepis''-like aetosaurs with less specialized armor. Under this more expansive usage, the strongly-supported clade encompassing "traditional" desmatosuchines (''sensu stricto'') was given a new name, Desmatosuchini. Aetosaurs () are heavily armored reptiles belonging to the extinct order Aetosauria (; from Greek, (aetos, "eagle") and (, "lizard")). ''Machaeroprosopus'' is an extinct genus of mystriosuchin leptosuchomorph phytosaur from the Late Triassic of the southwestern United States. ''M. validus'', once thought to be the type species of ''Machaeroprosopus'', was named in 1916 on the basis of three complete skulls from Chinle Formation, Arizona. ''Redondasaurus'' is an extinct genus of phytosaur from the Late Triassic (221.5 to 201.6 million years ago) of the southwestern United States. It was named by Hunt & Lucas in 1993, and contains two species, ''R. gregorii'' and ''R. bermani''. It is the youngest and most evolutionarily-advanced of the phytosaurs. Protome (genus)
''Protome'' is an extinct genus of parasuchid phytosaur from the Late Triassic of Arizona, represented by a single species, ''Protome batalaria''. It is known from a single holotype incomplete, partially disarticulated skull and left lower jaw called PEFO 34034 from the Upper Lot's Wife beds, Sonsela Member of the Chinle Formation in Petrified Forest National Park. The skull was discovered in 2004 by Michelle Stocker and Bill Parker and was described by them as a specimen of '' Smilosuchus adamanensis'' (then a species of ''Leptosuchus''). ''Nicrosaurus'' (/nɛkroʊˈsɔrəs/) is an extinct genus of phytosaur reptile existing during the Late Triassic period. Although it looked like a crocodile (and probably lived like the more terrestrial crocodylomorphs), it was not closely related to these creatures, instead being an example of parallel evolution.
