Archibald Prize
The Archibald Prize is an Australian portraiture art prize for painting, generally seen as the most prestigious portrait prize in Australia. It was first awarded in 1921 after the receipt of a bequest from J. F. Archibald, J. F. Archibald, the editor of ''The Bulletin (Australian periodical), The Bulletin'' who died in 1919. It is administered by the trustees of the Art Gallery of New South Wales and awarded for "the best portrait, preferentially of some man or woman distinguished in Art, Letters, Science or Politics, painted by an artist resident in Australia during the twelve months preceding the date fixed by the trustees for sending in the pictures". The Archibald Prize has been awarded annually since 1921 (with two exceptions) and since July 2015 the prize has been Australian dollar, AU$100,000. Nicholas Harding
Nicholas Harding (1956 – 2 November 2022) was a British-born Australian artist, known for his paintings, in particular portraits. Early life Harding was born in London, England in 1956. In 1965 his family emigrated to Australia, settling in the Sydney suburb of Normanhurst. He became an Australian citizen in 1974. Career Harding is known for his oil paintings done in a thickly layered impasto technique, his watercolours, and his large scale drawings in ink, mainly for landscape subjects; he is also an acclaimed portrait artist. Recognition and awards Harding won the Archibald Prize in 2001 with a portrait of John Bell as King Lear. He also won the People's Choice Award at the 2005 Archibald, with ''Bob's Daily Swim''. He was a finalist in the Archibald Prize for thirteen years in a row from 1994 to 2006, and also in 2009, 2011, 2016, 2017, 2018, and 2020. Lewis Miller (Australian Artist)
Lewis Miller (born 1959 in Melbourne) is an Australian painter and visual artist, known for his portraits and figurative works. History Miller's father Peter Miller was a painter in the social realist tradition. His sister Lisa Miller is an Australian singer-songwriter. He studied painting at the Victorian College of the Arts in Melbourne from 1977 to 1979, and then travelled to London, Europe and Malaysia. He held his first solo exhibition in 1986 and is represented in the National Gallery of Australia, state and private galleries. In 1998, he won the Archibald Prize, which brought him greater prominence and led to many further commissions. He has travelled widely, including to the US in 1998, 2000, 2003 and 2005. Wendy Sharpe
Wendy Sharpe (born 1960 in Sydney) is an Australian artist who lives and works in Sydney and Paris. She is the only child of British parents and has a Russian Jewish heritage. Her father is the writer and historian Alan Sharpe. Kerrie Lester
Kerrie Lester (31 May 1953 – 5 April 2016) was an Australian artist''Who's Who in Australia'', ConnectWeb, 2016. who was a frequent finalist in the Archibald Prize for portraiture, although she never won the main prize. She was born to John Lester and Dolores Metcalfe at the Crown Street Women's Hospital in Surry Hills, Sydney in 1953, and studied fine arts at the National Art School and the Alexander Mackie College of Advanced Education between 1971 and 1975. She held her first solo exhibition in 1976. Lester was a finalist in the Archibald Prize sixteen times, but never won. She did win the associated Packing Room Prize in 1998, for her ''Self-portrait as a bridesmaid''—an allusion to the saying "Always a bridesmaid, never the bride" in relation to her missing out on the Archibald so regularly, and she stopped entering the competition in 2012. Richard Gill (conductor)
Richard James Gill (4 November 1941 – 28 October 2018) was an Australian conductor of choral, orchestral and operatic works. He was known as a music educator and for his advocacy for music education of children. Life and career Gill was born and raised in the Sydney suburb of Eastwood where he attended Marist College Eastwood. Prior to becoming a professional conductor, he was a music teacher at Marsden High School, West Ryde, in Sydney. One of his students was Kim Williams who later became a lifelong friend. In 1969, he was the founding conductor of the Strathfield Symphony Orchestra in Sydney. He continued as conductor in 1973–74 and returned in 1979 to conduct the orchestra's 10th anniversary concert. Glenn Marcus Murcutt AO (born 25 July 1936) is an Australian architect and winner of the 1992 Alvar Aalto Medal, the 2002 Pritzker Architecture Prize, the 2009 American Institute of Architects Gold Medal and the 2021 Praemium Imperiale. Raymond Kenyon (artist)
Raymond Taylor Kenyon (October 21, 1878 – November 30, 1929) was an American dentist and politician from New York. Life Kenyon was born on October 21, 1878, in Leonardsville, New York, the son of James B. Kenyon, pastor of the local Methodist Episcopal Church, and Margaret. His sister was actress Doris Kenyon. Kenyon moved to Syracuse with his family when he was young. He graduated from Syracuse High School in 1896. He then attended Syracuse University, the Philadelphia Anatomical School, and the Philadelphia Dental College and Garretson Hospital of Oral Surgery, graduating from the latter in 1900.
