Archibald Prize
The Archibald Prize is an Australian portraiture art prize for painting, generally seen as the most prestigious portrait prize in Australia. It was first awarded in 1921 after the receipt of a bequest from J. F. Archibald, J. F. Archibald, the editor of ''The Bulletin (Australian periodical), The Bulletin'' who died in 1919. It is administered by the trustees of the Art Gallery of New South Wales and awarded for "the best portrait, preferentially of some man or woman distinguished in Art, Letters, Science or Politics, painted by an artist resident in Australia during the twelve months preceding the date fixed by the trustees for sending in the pictures". The Archibald Prize has been awarded annually since 1921 (with two exceptions) and since July 2015 the prize has been Australian dollar, AU$100,000. Stephanie Taylor (Australian Artist)
Stephanie Taylor (1899–1974) was an Australian artist, printmaker, gallerist, lecturer and art writer and broadcaster. She attained a wide audience in the later 1930s when the Australian Broadcasting Commission featured her art programs on radio stations in Sydney and Canberra as well as her hometown of Melbourne. Early career Taylor was the daughter of colonial artist, Elizabeth Ball, who studied at the National Gallery School in the 1860s, was elected as an associate of the Victorian Academy of Arts in 1879 and exhibited with that group. Elizabeth Ball married Captain Charles Taylor and settled in Williamstown where Taylor and her other three siblings were born. Taylor studied with sculptor Charles Douglas Richardson, who became a lifelong friend and whose memorial exhibition she organised in 1933. Archibald is a masculine given name, composed of the Germanic elements '' erchan'' (with an original meaning of "genuine" or "precious") and ''bald'' meaning "bold". Medieval forms include Old High German and Anglo-Saxon . Erkanbald, bishop of Strasbourg (d. 991) was also rendered in Old French. Rosine Guiterman
Rosine Guiterman (1886–1960) was a Sydney activist, teacher, poet and humanitarian. Early life Guiterman was born Rosine Lion in London in 1886 and came to Australia with her family in 1893. She matriculated from high school and enrolled in Arts at Sydney University. She had a great love of Shakespeare's plays, this love having been instilled in her since early childhood by her mother. Her interest in Shakespeare came to the notice of Sir Mungo MacCallum, Sydney University's foundation Professor of Modern Language and Literature, and he inspired her to a lifetime study of Shakespeare. She graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1908. In 1911 she gained her Master of Arts degree in English, having achieved considerable prominence as a poet. Indeed, her poem "Sic Vos Non Vobis" (''Thus do ye, but not for yourselves'') won the coveted Sydney University Prize for English verse. She was the first woman to achieve this distinction. Dora Wilson
Dora Lynnell Wilson (31 August 1883 – 21 November 1946) was a British-born Australian artist, best known in her adopted country of Australia for her etchings and street scenes. Early life Dora Lynnell Wilson was born on 31 August 1883 in Newcastle upon Tyne, England. Her parents were James Wilson, agent, and Annie Maria, née Green. The family emigrated to the state of Victoria in Australia in 1884, when Dora was a year old. Education Wilson was educated at Somerset School and Methodist Ladies' College in Melbourne. From 1901–1906 she studied at the National Gallery under Bernard Hall and Frederick McCubbin, forming friendships with fellow artists Ruth Hollick, Gwendolyn Grant, Norah Gurdon, and her partner Pegg Clarke. Lesbia Thorpe
Lesbia Thorpe (in private life Lee Baldwin) (1919–2009) was an Australian artist, possibly best known for her printmaking. From 1931 to 1937 Thorpe studied under Dattilo Rubbo, and was elected in 1937 to the Painter-Etchers Society and in 1943 to the Royal Art Society. Known as Lee Thorpe when working for the ABC, Thorpe was a freelance interviewer and host for ABC’s Women’s Session radio in the 1950s. Thorpe also travelled to Malta in 1955 to perform a radio show for the BBC in 1955. Interested in theatre, Thorpe performed for a couple of years with Doris Fitton at the Independent Theatre. From 1941, Thorpe executed murals and theatre sets for the Independent Theatre and the Theatre Royal in 1944 with William Constable, as well as executing murals for the Stage Door Canteen, Sydney.
