American Physical Society
The American Physical Society (APS) is a not-for-profit membership organization of professionals in physics and related disciplines, comprising nearly fifty divisions, sections, and other units. Its mission is the advancement and diffusion of knowledge of physics. The society publishes more than a dozen scientific journals, including the prestigious '' Physical Review'' and ''Physical Review Letters'', and organizes more than twenty science meetings each year. APS is a member society of the American Institute of Physics. Since January 2021 the organization has been led by chief executive officer Jonathan Bagger. History The American Physical Society was founded on May 20, 1899, when thirty-six physicists gathered at Columbia University for that purpose. Andrea Cavalleri
Andrea Cavalleri (born 1969) is an Italian physicist who specializes in optical science and in condensed matter physics. He is the founding director of the in Hamburg, Germany and a professor of Physics at the University of Oxford. He was awarded the 2018 Frank Isakson Prize for his pioneering work on ultrafast optical spectroscopy applied to condensed matter systems. Scientific achievements Cavalleri is known for his application of light to create new states of matter, and especially for the use of terahertz and mid-infrared optical pulses to sculpt new crystal structures. The field of research pioneered by Cavalleri is sometimes referred to as non-linear phononics. He has shown that phononic control can be used to create new crystal structures with light, to induce hidden metallic states in oxides, induce ferroelectricity in dielectrics, manipulate magnetism and create non-equilibrium superconductivity at very high temperatures. Cathryn Carson
Cathryn Leigh Carson is a historian of science, known for her biography of Werner Heisenberg. She holds the Thomas M. Siebel Presidential Chair in the History of Science at the University of California, Berkeley. Education and career Carson earned a bachelor's degree in history and philosophy of science in 1990 from the University of Chicago. She moved to Harvard University for graduate study, and completed her doctorate there in 1995. Her dissertation was ''Particle physics and cultural politics : Werner Heisenberg and the shaping of a role for the physicist in postwar West Germany''. Alessandra Buonanno
Alessandra Buonanno is an Italian naturalized-American theoretical physicist and director at the Max Planck Institute for Gravitational Physics (Albert Einstein Institute) in Potsdam. She is the head of the "Astrophysical and Cosmological Relativity" department. She holds a research professorship at the University of Maryland, College Park, and honorary professorships at the Humboldt University in Berlin, and the University of Potsdam. She is a leading member of the LIGO Scientific Collaboration, which observed gravitational waves from a binary black-hole merger in 2015. April S. Brown is an American electrical engineer and materials scientist in the Duke University Pratt School of Engineering, where she is a professor of electrical and computer engineering and the former John Cocke Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering. Education and career After developing an interest in psychology as a high school student in Hillsborough, North Carolina, Brown was encouraged to study electrical engineering by her father, also an electrical engineer. She is a 1981 graduate of North Carolina State University. She went to Cornell University for graduate study in electrical engineering, completing her PhD in 1985.
