Dominican Republic
The Dominican Republic ( ; es, República Dominicana, ) is a country located on the island of Hispaniola in the Greater Antilles archipelago of the Caribbean region. It occupies the eastern five-eighths of the island, which it shares with Haiti, making Hispaniola one of only two Caribbean islands, along with Saint Martin, that is shared by two sovereign states. The Dominican Republic is the second-largest nation in the Antilles by area (after Cuba) at , and third-largest by population, with approximately 10.7 million people (2022 est.), down from 10.8 million in 2020, of whom approximately 3.3 million live in the metropolitan area of Santo Domingo, the capital city. Mario Read Vittini
Mario Antonio Read Vittini (1926–2010) was a politician and diplomat from the Dominican Republic. Biography Mario Antonio Read Vittini was born in Hatillo, near San Cristóbal, on 15 May 1926. From his father, he descends from William Augustus Read (1820–1887), an American immigrant from Roxbury, Massachusetts, of English and French descent, who married Dominga Rodríguez Isambert, a Dominican of partial French origin. His mother has Corsican ancestry. Read Vittini became a Doctor of Law in 1948. On 10 June 1952 he became First Secretary for Embassies and Legations. In 1960 he sought political asylum in the Brazilian embassy and received asylum from the United States and exiled in New York, where he married Carmen Virginia Escobar. Aníbal de Jesús de Castro Rodríguez (born 1949) is a Dominican diplomat and journalist, who is currently the Dominican Republic Ambassador to Belgium and to the European Union. He was educated at the Universidad Autónoma de Santo Domingo and the University of East Anglia (Development Studies, 1979). In 2004 he was appointed Ambassador to the United Kingdom, representing the Dominican Republic as nonresident Ambassador to Australia (2007–11) and the Republic of Ireland (2009–11). He served as Dominican Republic Ambassador to the United States from 2011 to 2014. A well known journalist, he was founding editor of the newspaper ''Diario Libre'', and has written opinion columns for ''Listín Diario ''Listín Diario'' (Lit.
