Zighen Aym
Zighen Aym (born 1957 in Kabylie in Algeria) is an Algerian writer and engineer. After graduating with an engineering degree in the United States in 1982, he went back to his native Algeria and worked as a maintenance engineer in the Sahara for Sonatrach, the Algerian National Oil and Gas Company. He returned to the US in 1990 to pursue graduate studies and obtained a PhD in Mechanical Engineering. In his first book ''Still Moments: A Story about Faded Dreams and Forbidden Pictures'', he writes of his experience of ethnic profiling in the aftermath of 9/11. Zighen stopped along Route 66 to photograph the railroad tracks one day in October 2002. An Illinois State Police officer stopped and questioned him, asking for identification and what he was doing. What followed several months later was an FBI interrogation. Malek Bennabi
Malek Bennabi (1 January 1905 – 31 October 1973) ( ar, مالك بن نبي) was an Algerian writer and philosopher, who wrote about human society, particularly Muslim society with a focus on the reasons behind the fall of Muslim civilization. According to Malek Bennabi, the lack of new ideas in Islamic thought emerged what he coined ''civilizational bankruptcy''. He argued that in order to recover its former magnificence, Islamic society had to become an environment in which individuals felt empowered. In order to satisfy his spiritual and material needs, a Muslim needed to feel that his industry and creativity would find reward. Education Bennabi was born in Constantine, Algeria in 1905. Salah Benlabed
Salah Benlabed (born 1950) is an Algerian architect, academic, novelist and poet. Formerly a professor of architecture at the University of Algiers, he has been based in Montreal for more than a decade. He has designed numerous architectural projects in both Algeria and Quebec, including the CCE towers in downtown Montreal. Career Benlabed has co-authored a book of poems entitled ''Quand la terre tremble'' (''When the earth trembles''), published by the Algerian Cultural Center. He has participated in the Montreal Festival of the Arab World, delivering lectures and readings of his poems. In 2004, he set up a show on Abu Nuwas, the medieval Baghdadi poet. Mohammed Benchicou
Mohammed Boualem Benchicou ( ar, محمد بنشيكو) (born 1952 in Miliana, Aïn Defla Province) was the director and publisher of the Algerian newspaper '' Le Matin ( en, the sunrise)'', closed in August 2006. Career In 1989, he was one of the founders of the movement of Algerian journalists (MJA) a movement born during the opening of the media field. He then leads the team which relaunched ''Alger Républicain'', banned from publication in 1965. Benchicou left ''Alger Républicain'' in 1991 with Saïd Mekbel and Fodil Mezali and founded the daily newspaper ''Le Matin'' of opposition. In June 2004, he was sentenced to two years in prison for an infraction in money exchange regulation. Myriam Ben
Myriam Ben (10 October 1928 – 2001) was an Algerian activist, novelist, poet, and painter. Early life Marylise Ben Haïm was born in Algiers on October 10, 1928. Her father Moses Ben Haïm was of Judaized Berber descent and was a communist who had served in the French army during the October revolution, and her mother Sultana Stora, was an Andalusian Jewish musician. She was raised in a non-religious household, recalling later that she was seven years old before she realised her family was Jewish. In 1940, the Vichy French regime revoked the 19th century Crémieux Decree, so depriving Jewish Algerians of citizenship and resulting in Ben's expulsion from the she had been attending in Algiers. She briefly attended a Jewish school, Ecole Maïmonide, but completed her education at home due to her father's opposition to Zionism. Omar Belhouchet
Omar Belhouchet (born 9 February 1954 in Sétif) is an Algerian journalist who is renowned for his investigative reporting and supporting freedom of the press; his work and persistence have received international recognition. During the civil war of the 1990s, which put enormous pressure on the free press from both sides, Belhouchet was prosecuted numerous times by his government and survived two assassination attempts. Belhouchet started his journalism career at Algérie Presse Service followed by reporting for ''El Moudjahid'' (English: "The Holy Warrior"), the FLN government-owned newspaper. After the government allowed independent newspapers, in 1990 Belhouchet founded the daily newspaper '' El Watan'' (English: "The Nation"), together with nineteen colleagues from ''El Moudjahid''. Farida Belghoul
Farida Belghoul (born 1958) is a French author of Algerian descent who was raised in France. She was the main spokesperson for the second March for Equality and Against Racism which took place throughout France in 1984. Her novel ''Georgette!'' was published in 1986.
