Albanians
The Albanians (; sq, Shqiptarët ) are an ethnic group and nation native to the Balkan Peninsula who share a common Albanian ancestry, culture, history and language. They primarily live in Albania, Kosovo, North Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia as well as in Croatia, Greece, Italy and Turkey. They also constitute a large diaspora with several communities established across Europe, the Americas and Oceania. Albanians have Paleo-Balkanic origins. Exclusively attributing these origins to the Illyrians, Thracians or other Paleo-Balkan people is still a matter of debate among historians and ethnologists. The first certain reference to Albanians as an ethnic group comes from 11th century chronicler Michael Attaleiates who describes them as living in the theme of Dyrrhachium. Fatmir Gjata
Fatmir Gjata (1922–1989) was a prominent Albanian writer of Socialist Realism. Life Fatmir Gjata was born in Korçë, Albania, in 1922. His father, Isuf Gjata, was a teacher who joined the National Liberation Movement during World War II and fell in 1944. Fatmir Gjata studied in the French Lyceum of Korçë and later he attended the Maxim Gorky Literature Institute in Moscow. As a communist and a poet, he wrote several poetry volumes during World War II and later, some of which would become known partisan songs. During the war he was in charge of a local illegal newspaper. His poetry was embroidered with march-style enthusiasm and solemn lexicology. He would claim his place in Albanian literature during 1950-90 period with his novels, theatrical plays, short story volumes and screenplays, some of which would turn into films such as ''Tana'', the first Albanian movie. Llazar Siliqi
Llazar Siliqi (1924 – 2001) was a notable Albanian poet. His poetic profile was influenced by the work of Mayakovsky. Siliqi was born in Shkodër, the son of the Albanian poet and nationalist figure Risto Siliqi. He was an active participant of the Albanian resistance during World War II, was arrested and interned in the Nazi concentration camp in Pristina, today's Kosovo. Siliqi was the librettist of the first Albanian opera, ''Mrika'', composed by Prenkë Jakova, as well as ''Gjergj Kastrioti Skënderbeu'' (Scanderbeg) of 1969, an epic-heroic work written to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the death of Scanderbeg, Albania's national hero, with music from Jakova as well. Anastas Kondo
Anastas Kondo (November 28, 1937 – 2006) was an Albanian writer, screenwriter, and micropaleontologist. Life Anastas Kondo was born on 28 November 1937 in Kuçovë, Albania, and hailed from a family from Vuno, in Himarë municipality, on the Albanian riviera. He studied in the Saint Petersburg State Institute of Technology and graduated there as a geologist. Elvira Dones (born 1960) is an Albanian novelist, screenwriter, and documentary film producer. Born in the coastal city of Durrës Dones graduated from the State University of Tirana. In 1988 she was employed by Albanian State Television and in this capacity traveled to Switzerland, where she defected. Tried for treason in Albania (''in absentia''), she was sentenced to prison and denied access to her young son until after the collapse of communism in Albania in 1992. From 1988 until 2004 Dones lived in Switzerland where she worked as a writer and a television journalist, while also writing, directing, and producing several documentaries. Since 2004 she has lived in the United States. The bulk of her writing is in either Italian or Albanian, but several of her documentary films have been subtitled in English. Nijazi Ramadani
Nijazi Ramadani (born February 14, 1964 in Kokaj, Kosovo, Yugoslavia) is a Kosovar Albanian poet, novelist and literary critic. Education He completed high school in Gjilan. He then graduated from the University of Prishtina's Faculty of Education where he completed a degree in Mathematics and Information Technology. Work and activity Ramadani edited the periodical '' Ushtima e maleve'', which was described by the Yugoslav authorities as hostile and irredentist. Due to this, and his political alignment with the national movement, Ramadani was arrested and imprisoned in 1981. He began his poetic writings during the 1980s.
