Tupelo, Mississippi
Tupelo () is a city in and the county seat of Lee County, Mississippi, United States. With an estimated population of 38,300, Tupelo is the sixth-largest city in Mississippi and is considered a commercial, industrial, and cultural hub of North Mississippi. Tupelo was incorporated in 1866. The area had earlier been settled as "Gum Pond" along the Mobile and Ohio Railroad. On February 7, 1934, Tupelo became the first city to receive power from the Tennessee Valley Authority, thus giving it the nickname "The First TVA City". Much of the city was devastated by a major tornado in 1936 that still ranks as one of the deadliest tornadoes in American history. Ackerman is a town in Choctaw County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 1,510 at the 2010 census, down from 1,696 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Choctaw County. It is named for an early European-American landowner. Geography Ackerman is located southeast of the present-day center of Choctaw County. Mississippi Highway 15 passes through the town, leading north to Mathiston and south to Louisville, Mississippi (pronounced Lewis-ville). Mississippi Highway 12 passes through the northwest corner of the town, leading northeast to Starkville, where Mississippi State University is located, and southwest to Kosciusko. It is located four nautical miles (5 mi, 7 km) northeast of the central business district of Aberdeen and south of Amory. This airport is included in the National Plan of Integrated Airport Systems for 2011–2015, which categorized it as a ''general aviation'' facility. Facilities and aircraft Monroe County Airport covers an area of 420 acres (170 ha) at an elevation of 226 feet (69 m) above mean sea level. It has one runway designated 18/36 with an asphalt surface measuring 4,999 by 75 feet (1,524 x 23 m). Amory, Mississippi
Amory is a city in Monroe County, Mississippi. The population was 7,316 at the 2010 census. Located in the northeastern part of the state near the Alabama border, it was founded in 1887 as a railroad town by the Kansas City, Memphis and Birmingham Railroad. As a result, Cotton Gin Port, along the Tombigbee River to the east, was abandoned as businesses and people moved for railroad access. History Amory was founded as a planned railroad town. The Kansas City, Memphis & Birmingham Railroad was expanding in the South and needed a midpoint between Memphis, Tennessee, and Birmingham, Alabama, to service their locomotives. They laid out the new town of Amory, Mississippi, near the Alabama border, in 1887. Believing railroad access to be critical, people from nearby Cotton Gin Port, about 1.5 miles away and located along the Tombigbee River, abandoned their town and moved to Amory. Aberdeen, Mississippi
Aberdeen is the county seat of Monroe County, Mississippi, United States. As of the 2010 census, the population was 5,612. Located on the banks of the Tombigbee River, Aberdeen was one of the busiest Mississippi ports of the 19th century. Cotton was heavily traded in town, and for a time Aberdeen was Mississippi's second largest city. Aberdeen retains many historic structures from this period, with over 200 buildings on the National Register of Historic Places.
