List Of Active North Korean Ships
This is a List of active ships of the Korean People's Navy, the naval service of North Korea. Most of the list includes Ships of Korean Origin. Yet, it also contains types that are less frequently used, with their origins from past communist countries of the Soviet Union, and China. In late years, the production of lightly armored, but yet mobile and maneuverable small PT Torpedo Boats increased, as well as Patrol and Landing Craft used in case of National Emergency. Submarines, on the other were costly, hard to manufacture. The Corvettes of the Korean People’s Navy were all outclassed by the 2000s and new ones are still under way. Korean People's Navy
The Korean People's Army Naval Force (KPANF; Korean: 조선인민군 해군; Hanja: 朝鮮人民軍 海軍; ''Chosŏn-inmingun Haegun''; ) or the Korean People's Navy (KPN), is the naval service branch of the Korean People's Army, which contains each branch of the North Korean armed forces. There are some 780 vessels including 70 midget submarines (including the Yono-class submarine and Sang-O-class submarine), 20 Romeo-class submarines, and about 140 air cushioned landing craft. The North Korean navy is considered a brown-water (or riverine) navy and operates mainly within the 50 kilometer exclusion zone. The fleet consists of east and west coast squadrons, which cannot support each other in the event of war with South Korea. Nampo-class Corvette
The Nampo-class corvettes (or light frigates) are a class of warships built in North Korea. They were seen from satellite-photos in 2013 and are believed to be a replacement for the older . The class has some similarities to Myanmar Navy UMS Tabinshweht, an Anawrahta-class frigate. Two known hulls have been launched: one on the Japan Sea in Najin and one in Nampo for service in the Yellow Sea. Specification Little is known of their features and weapons. One of the clear element is the presence of a helicopter-deck and possibly even a small hangar on the hull. The only weapon system identified is anti-submarine rockets (RBU 1200 A/S mortars), thus making the corvette a response for the recent developments of the South Korean Navy in the field of submarines. Komar Class Missile Boat
The Soviet Project 183R class, more commonly known as the Komar class, its NATO reporting name, meaning "mosquito", is a class of missile boats, the first of its kind, built in the 1950s and 1960s. Notably, they were the first to sink another ship with anti-ship missiles in 1967. Design The Project 183 motor torpedo boat (MTB) was designed just after World War II. These boats were armed with two torpedo tubes and were used extensively by Soviet coastal forces in the 1950s. The torpedo boat had a wooden semi-planing hull and was fitted with radar. Over 622 MTBs were built. A submarine chaser variant fitted with sonar and depth charges was also built as was a radio-controlled target boat. In 1956, the P-15 Termit missile became available (NATO reporting name: SS-N-2 "Styx"). The Project 183 proved to be a natural choice for mounting the new missiles, giving the small, fast boats great firepower for their size. Type 021 Class Missile Boat
China first received a single unit of Soviet in January 1965, and four more in 1966 through 1967 and the last two in 1968. The Hudong Shipyard built the Chinese version as Type 021-class missile boat at a rate of ten boats per year with several different versions. The majority of this class is being transferred to reserve status. Several dozen remain active and these active units are being rearmed with C-101 supersonic anti-ship missiles. Osa-class Missile Boat
The Project 205 Moskit (''mosquito'') more commonly known by their NATO reporting name Osa, are a class of missile boats developed for the Soviet Navy in the late 1950s. Until 1962 this was classified as a large torpedo boat. The Osa class is probably the most numerous class of missile boats ever built, with over 400 vessels constructed between 1960 and 1973 for both the Soviet Navy and for export to allied countries. "Osa" means "wasp" in Russian, but it is not an official name. The boats were designated as "large missile cutters" in the Soviet Navy. Nongo Class
The ''Nongo'' class is a term used by the US Department of Defense to identify a series of new medium-size warships built by North Korea starting in the 2000s. Few such vessels are believed to be in service, but they appear to form the core of a modernized Korean People's Navy. Features and design In late '80s the North Korean shipbuilding industry experimented a large warship with an innovative catamaran-hull design, the Soho class frigate. After the '90s, when the North Korean economy showed some signs of recovering after the great famine, the Korean People's Navy started introducing again this design to modernize its fleet of medium-size vessels. Krivak-class Frigate
The Krivak class, Soviet designation Project 1135 ''Burevestnik'' (storm petrel), are a series of frigates and guard ships (patrol boats) built in the Soviet Union primarily for the Soviet Navy since 1970. Later some sub-branches, like the ''Nerey'' (Nereus) were designed for coastal patrol by the KGB Border Troops.
