Liselotte Latrous
Liselotte (Lotti) Latrous (born 1953) is a Swiss healthcare worker and philanthropist who since the late 1990s has dedicated her life to caring for HIV/AIDS patients and their children in facilities created near Abidjan in the Ivory Coast. As a result, she was honoured as the Swiss Woman of the Year in 2004 and in 2022 she received the Pahl Peace Prize from Liechtenstein. Biography Born in Dielsdorf near Zürich in 1953, Latrous was brought up in nearby Regensberg. While working as a 16-year-old au pair in Geneva, she met her husband-to-be Aziz Latrous, who was studying engineering. When he left to take case of his family in Tunisia, Latrous gave up training as a nurse and worked as a care assistant so that she could provide financial support for her boyfriend and family. HIV/AIDS
Human immunodeficiency virus infection and acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (HIV/AIDS) is a spectrum of conditions caused by infection with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), a retrovirus. Following initial infection an individual may not notice any symptoms, or may experience a brief period of influenza-like illness. Typically, this is followed by a prolonged incubation period with no symptoms. If the infection progresses, it interferes more with the immune system, increasing the risk of developing common infections such as tuberculosis, as well as other opportunistic infections, and tumors which are rare in people who have normal immune function. Grand-Bassam
Grand-Bassam () is a town in southeastern Ivory Coast, lying east of Abidjan. It is a sub-prefecture of and the seat of Grand-Bassam Department; it is also a commune. During the late 19th century, Grand-Bassam was briefly the French colonial capital of Ivory Coast. Because of its outstanding examples of colonial architecture and town-planning, and the juxtaposition of the colonial town with a traditional Nzema village, the historic center of Grand-Bassam was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2012.
