The University of California, Santa Barbara (UC Santa Barbara or UCSB) is a public land-grant research university in Santa Barbara, California with 23,196 undergraduates and 2,983 graduate students enrolled in 2021–2022. It is part of the University of California 10-university system. Tracing its roots back to 1891 as an independent teachers' college, UCSB joined the University of California system in 1944, and is the third-oldest undergraduate campus in the system, after UC Berkeley and UCLA. ''Jadaliyya'' ("dialectic") is an independent ezine founded in 2010 by the Arab Studies Institute (ASI) to cover the Arab World and the broader Middle East. It publishes articles in Arabic, French, English and Turkish, and is run primarily on a volunteer basis by an editorial team, and an expanding pool of contributors that includes academics, journalists, activists and artists. Overview ''Jadaliyya'' () is derived from the ar, جدل, jadal, lit=controversy, meaning "dialectic." ''Jadaliyya's'' co-editors are unpaid volunteers and the magazine does not accept advertising. While most of ''Jadaliyya'' is either self-funded or funded by barter for "big projects," it has received grants from the Open Society Institute.
