The subcutaneous tissue (), also called the hypodermis, hypoderm (), subcutis, superficial fascia, is the lowermost layer of the integumentary system in vertebrates. The types of cells found in the layer are fibroblasts, adipose cells, and macrophages. Lipodystrophy syndromes are a group of genetic or acquired disorders in which the body is unable to produce and maintain healthy fat tissue. The medical condition is characterized by abnormal or degenerative conditions of the body's adipose tissue. A more specific term, ''lipoatrophy ("lipo" is Greek for "fat", and "dystrophy" is Greek for "abnormal or degenerative condition")'', is used when describing the loss of fat from one area (usually the face). Lipoatrophia semicircularis is a medical condition in humans, commonly known as ''ribbed thighs''. It consists of a semicircular zone of atrophy of the subcutaneous fatty Biological tissue, tissue located mostly on the front of the thighs. Skin and underlying muscles remains intact. Semicircular lipoatrophy mainly affects office workers. The ribs in the thighs are typically between 2 and 4 cm high and are typically located at about 72 cm above the ground, which is the standard height of office furniture. Cause It is not yet clear what exactly causes semicircular lipoatrophy. Some hypotheses are that it is caused by localized pressure or by electromagnetic fields.
