Jānis Lipke
Jānis Lipke (also Žanis and Jan Lipke; 1 February 1900, Mitau – 14 May 1987, Riga) was a Latvian rescuer of Jews in Riga in World War II from the Holocaust in Latvia. Lipke, a dock worker in the port of Riga, was determined to help save Latvian Jews from capture by the Nazis after witnessing actions against them in the streets. He retrained in order to become a contractor for the Luftwaffe, and then used his position to smuggle Jewish workers out of the Riga ghetto and camps in and around Riga, whom he concealed with the aid of his wife Johanna until the arrival of the Red Army in October 1944. The Lipkes and their various helpers saved forty people in this way, one-fifth of the approximately 200 Jews who survived the war in Latvia. When Lipke died in 1987, the Jews of Riga arranged his funeral. Honors Yad Vashem honored Lipke and his wife as Righteous Among the Nations on 28 June 1966. Lipke Holthuis
Lipke Bijdeley Holthuis (21 April 1921 – 7 March 2008) was a Dutch crustacean, carcinologist, considered one of the "undisputed greats" of carcinology, and "the greatest carcinologist of our time". Holthuis was born in Probolinggo, East Java and obtained his doctorate from Leiden University on 23 January 1946. He was appointed the assistant curator of the ''Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie'' (now ''Naturalis'') in Leiden in 1941. He was the most prolific carcinologist of the 20th century, publishing 620 papers (108 of which were in the Leiden Museum Journals) totalling 12,795 pages which is an average of 185 pages per year and an average of approximately 21 pages per paper. These were published on many groups of crustaceans, their natural history and nomenclature, and the history of carcinology. Paul Lipke
Paul Lipke (30 June 1870 – 8 March 1955) was a German chess master. Lipke was born in Erfurt. In 1889, he tied for 5–6th in Breslau (6th DSB Congress, ''Hauptturnier A'', Emanuel Lasker won), and took 4th in Dessau. In 1892, he won in Dresden (7th DSB-Kongress, ''Hauptturnier A''), and he took 2nd in Halle (''Quadrangular''). In 1893, he took 3rd in Kiel (8th DSB-Kongress, Curt von Bardeleben and Carl August Walbrodt won). At the 9th DSB-Kongress in Leipzig, 1894, he took 2nd, behind Siegbert Tarrasch but ahead of several established masters, including Richard Teichmann, J. H. Blackburne, Carl Walbrodt, David Janowski and Georg Marco; he also won his individual game against Tarrasch.
