Lions Gibraltar F.C. Women
Lions Gibraltar Football Club Women is an amateur football club in Gibraltar, currently playing in the Gibraltar Women's Football League. The club is affiliated to Lions Gibraltar. History The earliest known incarnation of Lions women competed in the 1999 season of the Gibraltar Women's Football League, although records before then are not known. After an 8 year absence from women's football the team returned, competing in the 2007 Women's League after merging with Tunnel Tigers, during which time they competed as Lions Tunnel Tigers. However, after finishing bottom of the league that season, the team quickly folded. The club returned as an independent entity in 2010, again finishing bottom of the league as Gibraltar United's women's team won the league, however the 2011 merger of the two men's teams also saw the women's teams merging after another hiatus from the league, returning in 2013 under its current incarnation and winning the league on their first attempt. Victoria Stadium (Gibraltar)
Victoria Stadium is a multi-purpose stadium in Gibraltar. It is currently used mostly for football matches, but also hosts the annual Gibraltar Music Festival. It is located close to Gibraltar Airport just off Winston Churchill Avenue. It was named after the wife of Gibraltarian philanthropist John Mackintosh. Despite initial plans to replace the stadium in the 2010s, the Gibraltar Football Association purchased the stadium from the Government of Gibraltar in April 2017 in order to improve and renovate it. The redevelopment of the stadium is due to start in late 2022, with the national team announcing they will play UEFA and FIFA games in Faro, Portugal. Winston Churchill Avenue, Gibraltar
Winston Churchill Avenue is an arterial road in the British overseas territory of Gibraltar, and is the only road in and out of the territory, connecting it with Spain. Once the customs are crossed, the avenue becomes the dual carriageway ( es, Autovía) CA-34 (former national road N-351). Description The northern end of the road starts at Gibraltar's border with Spain and passes Gibraltar International Airport at Victoria Stadium, which is Gibraltar's major sporting venue. The road intersects the airport's runway at surface level; movable barricades close when aircraft land or take off. In 2009, the Government of Gibraltar announced that a new highway will be built in order to avoid motor vehicles crossing the runway, which currently causes congestion. The new road, a dual carriageway, will link the customs checkpoint with Devil's Tower Road, crossing the east end of the airport runway underground, through a 350-metre tunnel. Gibraltar Women's Football League
The Gibraltar Women's Football League is the top level amateur women's football championship of Gibraltar. Due to the lack of resources available for women's football, the league has been contested by five teams since 2021, and the league is treated as a development competition. This status means that, as of the 2021 season, clubs are ineligible to enter the UEFA Women's Champions League. History The earliest known record of the competition dates back to 1999, when three teams (Manchester United, Lions and Victoria United) took part. However, the league was seemingly abandoned mid-season with Manchester United top of the table. After that, the league was not held for several years, aside from an edition held in 2003 between five middle schools. The league was revived fully in 2005, with Manchester United winning the title. The 2023–24 Gibraltar Women's Football League is the eighth season of 11-a-side women's football in Gibraltar since the territory joined UEFA in 2013, and FIFA in 2016. The league had been in operation for a number of years previously, but often as a 9-a side tournament. Teams are ineligible for entry to the UEFA Women's Champions League as the league is considered a "development" tournament. Lions Gibraltar are the reigning champions from the previous season. Teams Once again, 5 teams will contest the division, with the addition of Hercules to the league as a joint venture between Hercules Futsal Club and College 1975. 2020–21 Gibraltar Women's Football League
The 2020–21 Gibraltar Women's Football League is the fifth season of 11-a-side women's football in Gibraltar since the territory joined UEFA in 2013, and FIFA in 2016. The league had been in operation for a number of years previously, but teams were ineligible for entry to the UEFA Women's Champions League as it was only a 9-a-side tournament. Lincoln Red Imps Women were the reigning champions, but disbanded their women's team in summer 2020. After only two games, the league paused on 15 December 2020, before resuming on 25 May 2021. While the first two games of the season were played at Victoria Stadium, resurfacing at the ground meant that the restarted league was played on pitch at the Devil's Tower Camp, with permission from Gibraltar's Ministry of Defence. The 2021–22 Gibraltar Women's Football League is the sixth season of 11-a-side women's football in Gibraltar since the territory joined UEFA in 2013, and FIFA in 2016. The league had been in operation for a number of years previously, but teams were ineligible for entry to the UEFA Women's Champions League as it was only a 9-a-side tournament. Lions Gibraltar were the reigning champions from the previous season, which had been shortened due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This season is set to be the first since the 2016–17 season where more than 3 teams participate, with two new teams entering the competition. Lions Gibraltar retained their title in March 2022, having won every single game and conceding no goals throughout, with 115 goals in 12 games.
