Lionel Skeggins
Lionel Skeggins is a fictional character on the New Zealand soap opera ''Shortland Street'' who was portrayed by John Leigh. His casting on the show began in late 1993 as a guest role and ended in early 1999 as a fan favourite regular. Lionel returned for a cameo in the show's 25th Anniversary in 2017 and again for the 30th anniversary in 2022. Creation and casting John Leigh auditioned for the role in 1993 but was considered risky due to his relatively "old" age and lack of TV experience. Leigh recalls the casting director pondering why he had no television experience at 27 years old and concluding, "'He musn't be very good!'". However, after landing a 2-week recurring role, the character proved popular and was eventually brought back the following year as a core cast member. He ended up staying for 5 years. ''Shortland Street'' is a New Zealand prime-time soap opera centring on the fictitious Shortland Street Hospital, first broadcast on TVNZ 2 on 25 May 1992. It is New Zealand's longest-running drama and soap opera, being broadcast continuously for over 7,500 episodes and 30 years, and is one of the most watched television programmes in New Zealand. Angela Marie Dotchin (born 31 March 1974 in Auckland) is a former actress best most known for her roles as Kirsty Knight in ''Shortland Street'', and as Emilia Rothschild in '' Jack of All Trades'' and for starring as Kora on ''Young Hercules''. Damien Alexander Heathcliff Johnson is a fictional character on the New Zealand soap opera ''Shortland Street''. Portrayed by comedian Grant Lobban, Damo first appeared over several years in a guest role before becoming a regular character in 2017. Primarily written as comic relief, Damo has also featured in storylines such as his diagnosis of bowel cancer, attempted suicide, bullying and men's mental health due to stress. Michael Galvin (born 27 March 1967) is a New Zealand actor, singer and playwright, well known for his role as Chris Warner on the soap opera Shortland Street, a character he has played almost since the show's debut in 1992 until 1996 and again from 2000 to present, and remains as of 2020, the only original cast member. Oscar Henry is a fictional character on the New Zealand soap opera ''Shortland Street'' played by Christopher Brown from 1998 to 1999. Oscar debuted in mid-1998 as a love interest for Minnie Crozier (Katrina Devine). He was at first liked by the clinic staff but he was soon revealed to be possessive and overpowering. When Minnie broke up with him, he blackmailed her and raped her.
