Linwood College
Te Aratai College (founded as Linwood High School, then renamed Linwood College from 2000–2021) is a co-educational secondary school in Linwood, a suburb of Christchurch, New Zealand. History Founded in the early 1950s to cater for the secondary educational needs of a growing population in eastern Christchurch, Linwood High School became one of New Zealand's larger secondary schools during the 1970s, with a roll of over 1600 pupils at one point. However, as it also served a relatively low socio-economic area of industrial southeast Christchurch, and promoted sporting achievement alongside academic achievement, the school gained a reputation for being "rough". Following the introduction of the 1989 Tomorrow's Schools policy, the role declined from about 1500, in 1990, to 775, in 2000. Linwood, New Zealand
Linwood is an inner suburb of the city of Christchurch, New Zealand. It lies to the east of the city centre, mostly between Ferry Road and Linwood Avenue, two of the major arterial roads to the eastern suburbs of Christchurch. History Linwood was given its name by Joseph Brittan, who purchased rural section 300 in Avonside. The adjoining rural section 301 was to be part of the farm, but the right was sold but probably farmed with rural section 300 and was eventually bought back by his son in 1874. To this was added a small part of section 30 to give access in 1855 and 21-year lease for the adjoining sections in 1862 giving a total area of about 380 acres (about 150ha). He called the farm Linwood, as he was from Linwood, Hampshire. Brittan built Linwood House at 30 Linwood Avenue in 1857, which stood there until demolition following the February 2011 Christchurch earthquake. April Ieremia
April Ieremia (born 31 October 1967) is a New Zealand former netball player and television host. Netball career April Ieremia was a New Zealand attacking player from Christchurch who represented Canterbury from 1983–1992. In 1985 she made the Young Internationals before being selected for New Zealand Under 21 in 1986 and then again in 1988 at the inaugural World Youth Cup. At 20, Ieremia represented the Silver Ferns (New Zealand's national netball team) from 1988–1990 and again in 1992. Mike Hosking
Michael Noel James Hosking IV is a New Zealand television and radio broadcaster who has worked for Radio New Zealand and TVNZ and from 2008 has been the weekday breakfast host on Newstalk ZB with "The Mike Hosking Breakfast". He is a supporter of the centre-right National party and is often openly critical of the Labour-led government. He has lived and worked as a broadcaster in Wellington, Christchurch and currently resides in Auckland. The Broadcasting Standards Authority (BSA) has received several complaints against Hosking. Tony Fomison
Tony Fomison (12 July 1939 – 7 February 1990) was a notable artist in New Zealand. He was an important post-war visual artist in the country and influenced New Zealand art by incorporating elements of narrative and myth into contemporary art. Background Fomison was born in Christchurch and studied at Linwood High School. He studied sculpture at the School of Fine Arts at Canterbury University, where he was taught by Rudi Gopas, and during these early years he continued an interest in archaeology which had begun in high school. He also compiled photographic essays during this period. Fomison began painting in earnest in 1960–61. In 1964, he travelled to England and Spain and lived in the former for three years before returning to Christchurch in 1967. Kerry Burke
Sir Thomas Kerry Burke (born 24 March 1942) is a former New Zealand politician and Speaker of the New Zealand House of Representatives. He was a Member of Parliament for the Labour Party from 1972 to 1975 and again from 1978 to 1990, and later served twelve years on Canterbury Regional Council (Environment Canterbury) from 1998 to 2010. The New Zealand women's national field hockey team is also known as the Black Sticks Women. Christopher Anton Arthur (born 25 January 1990) is an English professional footballer who plays as a left midfielder or left–back for Sittingbourne. Career Arthur was born in Enfield, London. started his career in the youth team of Queens Park Rangers (QPR), and was sent on work experience to Conference South side Hayes & Yeading United in December 2007. Silver Ferns
The New Zealand national netball team, commonly known as the Silver Ferns, represent New Zealand in international netball. The team take their nickname from the Silver Tree Fern (''Cyathea dealbata''), which is National symbols of New Zealand, an emblem for many New Zealand sports teams. Brenda Rowberry
Brenda Rowberry is a former netball player in New Zealand. She played for her country on 12 occasions, including in the 1971 Netball World Championships. She is the mother of Anna Stanley, who played netball for the ''Silver Ferns'' 92 times. Early life Brenda Rowberry (née Walker) was born on 3 December 1946. She went to the University of Otago School of Physical Education (OUSPE) in Dunedin, where she met her husband, Jerry Rowberry, who would go on to teach Physical Education at Christ's College, Canterbury. They both graduated in 1969. While at university, Rowberry competed in athletics in shot put, discus and javelin events. Paul Ackerley
Paul Douglas Ackerley (16 May 1949 – 3 May 2011) was a field hockey player, maths teacher and public servant from New Zealand. He played field hockey at right half. He was a member of the national team that won the gold medal at the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal. He was selected for the 1980 Summer Olympics, but most sports in New Zealand boycotted the Moscow games so he did not compete. He had 25 international caps for New Zealand.
