Linwood, Texas
Linwood is an unincorporated community in Cherokee County, located in the U.S. state of Texas. According to the Handbook of Texas, the community had a population of 40 in 2000. It is located within the Tyler-Jacksonville combined statistical area. History Joseph Durst and his wife Delilah were the first settlers in Linwood sometime before 1832. Another community named Lockranzie developed a half mile east of the community, but the post office moved to Linwood in 1851. It was platted by James H. Durst and Ann Harrison Terrell, promoting it as a port along the Angelina River. Navigation along the river failed and the community grew sharply. Charles Chevallier, Henry Raguet and his brother (also named Charles) relocated here from Nacogdoches and opened stores here in the 1850s. Other early settlers included R.W. Angelina River
The Angelina River is formed by the junction of Barnhardt and Shawnee creeks northwest of Laneville in southwest central Rusk County, Texas. The river flows southeast for and forms the boundaries between Cherokee and Nacogdoches, Angelina and Nacogdoches, and Angelina and San Augustine counties. It passes under US 59 via former Angelina River Bridge. It empties into the Neches River north of Jasper in northwestern Jasper County. The Sam Rayburn Reservoir is on the southern part of the river. Rusk, Texas
Rusk is a city and the county seat of Cherokee County in the U.S. state of Texas. At the 2020 United States census, it had a population of 5,285. History The town was established by an act of the Texas Legislature on April 11, 1846. It was named after Thomas Jefferson Rusk, signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence. Texas State Highway 21
State Highway 21 (SH 21) runs from the Texas-Louisiana boundary east of San Augustine to San Marcos in east and central Texas. SH 21 mostly follows the alignment of the Old San Antonio Road and the El Camino Real, except for the portion between Midway and Bryan, where the Old San Antonio Road took a more northerly route, and SH 21 follows a more direct route. That section of the Old San Antonio Road is served by Texas State Highway OSR. Alto is a town in Cherokee County, Texas, United States. With a population of 1,027 at the 2020 U.S. census, Alto is the closest municipality to the Caddo Mounds State Historic Site, an archaeological site dating back to 800 CE, featuring a prehistoric village and ceremonial center. History An early settler in the region was Martin Lacy, who built Lacy's Fort just to the west to the current site of Alto in around 1838. George Whitfield Terrell
George Whitfield Terrell (1803 – 1846) was an attorney general, judge, and diplomat in the Republic of Texas. He was born in Kentucky in 1803. His father was James Terrell. His family moved to Tennessee when he was a child. He studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1827. Terrell became Attorney General (equivalent to a district attorney) for the Thirteenth District of Tennessee in 1829 and served until 1836.
