Lindsey Hopkins Sr.
Lindsey Hopkins Sr. (April 22, 1879 - August 14, 1937) was an American businessman and philanthropist. He was both a major stockholder and a director of the Coca-Cola Company. In addition, he was a director at The Sperry Corp., North American Aviation (of which Eastern Airlines was a subsidiary), the Reynolds Metal Company, and several banks and insurance companies. His Metropolitan Miami real estate included business and hotel properties in Miami, Coral Gables, and Miami Beach. Early life Lindsey Hopkins Sr. was born at Reidsville, North Carolina on April 22, 1879. His parents were Jonathan and Minerva Jones Hopkins. After attending public schools, he attended the University of North Carolina and in 1908 married Leonora Balsley of Greensboro. Hopkins started out as a printer’s devil with the Greensboro Patriot making $2 a week, graduated quickly to selling oil, and soon displayed a knack for making vast sums of money by investing in new ventures. Reidsville is a city in Rockingham County in the U.S. state of North Carolina. At the 2020 census, the city had a total population of 14,580. Reidsville is included in the Greensboro–High Point Metropolitan Statistical Area of the Piedmont Triad. Reidsville was established in the early 19th century as an outpost and stop on the stage line that ran between Salisbury, North Carolina, and Danville, Virginia, and was originally known as Wright's Crossroads. The Overland Automobile Company was an American automobile manufacturer in Toledo, Ohio. It was the founding company of Willys-Overland and one of the earliest mass producers of automobiles. History The Overland Automobile department was founded in Terre Haute, Indiana by Claude E. Cox, when Charles Minshall of Standard Wheel Company decided to expand into automobile manufacturing. Standard Wheel were major suppliers of wheels to the carriage industry. Cox, a recent graduate of Rose Polytechnic Institute, developed a gasoline runabout in 1903. Stephen Andrew Lynch (September 3, 1882October 4, 1969), known more commonly as S.A. Lynch, was an early motion picture industry pioneer. Personal life Lynch grew up in Asheville, North Carolina, the son of Stephen Scott Lynch, a Civil War veteran wounded in the Battle of Gettysburg, and Jane Susannah Butler Lynch. Lynch was raised in his family's Asheville grocery business. Lynch stood out in his youth as a football and baseball star (earning the nickname "Diamond Lynch"), and was coaching and managing professionally by his early 20s. Lynch served the head football and baseball coach at Maryville University in Maryville, Tennessee, from 1902 to 1903. While with Maryville in 1903, he also coached two games for the Tusculum College Pioneers football team.
