Curling
Curling is a sport in which players slide stones on a sheet of ice toward a target area which is segmented into four concentric circles. It is related to bowls, boules, and shuffleboard. Two teams, each with four players, take turns sliding heavy, polished granite stones, also called ''rocks'', across the ice ''curling sheet'' toward the ''house'', a circular target marked on the ice. Each team has eight stones, with each player throwing two. The purpose is to accumulate the highest score for a ''game''; points are scored for the stones resting closest to the centre of the house at the conclusion of each ''end'', which is completed when both teams have thrown all of their stones once. A game usually consists of eight or ten ends. The player can induce a curved path, described as ''curl'', by causing the stone to slowly rotate as it slides. Mike Hay
Mike Hay is a Scottish curler and curling coach. As a player, he had success from 1982 to 1996. He went on to coach the women's team that won gold in Curling at the 2002 Winter Olympics and, partly due to this, was appointed as an MBE in 2004. He later served as Britain's Olympic performance manager at the 2010 Winter Olympics. After this he became Chef de Mission for Team GB for the 2014 Winter Olympics, a role he also held at the 2018 Winter Olympics. He is brother to David Hay and son of curler Chuck Hay. Scottish Mixed Curling Championship
The Scottish Mixed Curling Championship is the national mixed curling championship for Scotland. Team are composed of two men and two women, playing in alternating positions up the team, meaning the lead and third must be of the same gender, and likewise the second and fourth players. The championship has been held annually since 1976. From 2005 to 2014 the winners progressed to represent Scotland at the European Mixed Curling Championship. Since 2015 the winners have represented Scotland at the World Mixed Curling Championship. The current champions are Luke Carson, Kirsten Bousie, Mark Taylor and Katie McMillan, who went on to win their round robin group in the 2019 World Mixed Championship before losing to Germany in the quarterfinals. Team Carson beat out six other teams to claim the 2019 Championship, which was contested between 24 and 26 May at The Peak in Stirling. John Ross Mackay, (偕約翰, December 31, 1915 – October 28, 2014) was a Canadian geographer. He is most noted for his explorations of permafrost phenomena in the western Canadian Arctic. His 40 plus years of study has enabled the building of pipeline operations and petroleum explorations in areas of frozen ground. The Royal Society of Canada stated the following when Mackay was awarded the Willet G. Miller Medal in 1975: :As a research worker with a superb talent of combining three elements – theory, design of simple but effective instruments, and skilled and careful field observations – he has met the challenges of applied science. Eve Muirhead (born 22 April 1990) is a Scottish former curler from Perth and the skip of the British Olympic Curling team. Muirhead and the GB team became Olympic champions at the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing, having previously won the bronze medal at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi. The 2007 Continental Cup of Curling was held at the Medicine Hat Arena in Medicine Hat, Alberta on December 13-16. North America won its third title, defeating Team Europe 290-110. Format The Continental Cup involves four disciplines within the sport, each worth a designated number of points - Team Games (72 points), Mixed Doubles (36 points), Singles (32 points) and Skins Games (260 points). The first side to score 201 points is declared the winner. Each member of the winning side receives $2,000, while the losing side members get $1,400 each from the $88,400 total purse. The revised Mixed Doubles format involved only two players per team, instead of the previous four (two throwers and two sweepers), who also become sweepers during the eight-end games. Each team throws five rocks per end, with two stationary stones placed before each end, one in the house and one in front. Karen Addison (born 28 August 1970) is a Scottish curler. In 1990, Addison won the World Junior Curling Championships playing third for the Scottish team, skipped by Kirsty Addison. She won the gold again two years later in 1992, but did not play any games, as she was the alternate on Gillian Barr's team. Addison has played in four European Curling Championships- winning silver medals in 1995 and 2007. She has also played in four World Curling Championships, winning a bronze in 2007 as the alternate for Scotland (skipped by Kelly Wood). She did not play any games.
