Lindsay Bury
Lindsay Bury (9 July 1857 – 30 October 1935) was an English amateur footballer who, playing as a full back, helped the Old Etonians win the FA Cup in 1879 and made two appearances for England in the 1870s. He also played cricket for Hampshire in 1877 and for Cambridge University in 1877 and 1878. Education Bury was born in Withington, Manchester and was educated at Eton College. He played for the college football team in 1875 and 1876, before going up to Trinity College, Cambridge. At Cambridge, he earned a blue for football in both 1877 and 1878, as well as a blue for cricket in 1877. He was also especially noted for his sprinting and hammer throwing, and won athletics blues in 1878, 1879 and 1880. He graduated BA in the latter year. First-class Cricket
First-class cricket, along with List A cricket and Twenty20 cricket, is one of the highest-standard forms of cricket. A first-class match is one of three or more days' scheduled duration between two sides of eleven players each and is officially adjudged to be worthy of the status by virtue of the standard of the competing teams. Matches must allow for the teams to play two innings each, although in practice a team might play only one innings or none at all. The etymology of "first-class cricket" is unknown, but it was used loosely before it acquired official status in 1895, following a meeting of leading English clubs. At a meeting of the Imperial Cricket Conference (ICC) in 1947, it was formally defined on a global basis. Derbyshire County Cricket Club
Derbyshire County Cricket Club is one of eighteen first-class county clubs within the domestic cricket structure of England and Wales. It represents the historic county of Derbyshire. Its limited overs team is called the Derbyshire Falcons in reference to the famous peregrine falcon which nests on the Derby Cathedral (it was previously called the Derbyshire Scorpions until 2005 and the Phantoms until 2010). Founded in 1870, the club held first-class status from its first match in 1871 until 1887. Because of poor performances and lack of fixtures in some seasons, Derbyshire then lost its status for seven seasons until it was invited into the County Championship in 1895. Harry Goodhart
Harry Chester Goodhart (17 July 1858 – 21 April 1895) was an English amateur footballer who played as a forward in four FA Cup Finals for Old Etonians, before going on to become Professor of Humanity at the University of Edinburgh. Early life and education Goodhart was born in Wimbledon, the son of Charles Woide Goodhart (1829–1914), and educated at Eton College. He played for the college football team in 1877 and also represented the college in cricket. He made his first cricket appearance for the college in June 1876 and played throughout that summer and the following. His finest spell came in July 1876 when he scored 55 against I Zingari and 51 against Harrow School in consecutive matches. During his time at Eton, Goodhart was a friend of James Kenneth Stephen (1859–1892) who became a poet. Charles Clerke (footballer)
Charles John Clerke (8 September 1857 – 7 November 1944) was an English amateur footballer who scored the only goal in the 1879 FA Cup Final. Birth Clerke was born at Hanover Square, London and christened at St George's, Hanover Square in December 1857. He was the fourth child of Sir William Henry Clerke (1822–1882) from Clonmel, County Tipperary, Ireland who was Principal Clerk in the Treasury and succeeded to the title of 10th Baronet Clerke, of Hitcham on 16 February 1861. Football career Clerke was educated at Eton College and in 1878 joined the Old Etonians football XI. He went up to Christ Church, Oxford, and represented the University of Oxford at cricket. Having scored three goals in the Old Boys' run to the 1879 FA Cup Final, he was selected at outside-left for the final itself, played at Kennington Oval on 29 March 1879. Arthur Kinnaird, 11th Lord Kinnaird
Arthur Fitzgerald Kinnaird, 11th Lord Kinnaird (16 February 1847 – 30 January 1923) was a British principal of The Football Association and a leading footballer, considered by some journalists as the first football star. He played in nine FA Cup Finals, a record that stands to this day. His record of five wins in the competition stood until 2010, when it was broken by Ashley Cole. Kinnaird also served as president of The FA for 33 years. For his contributions to football and the FA Cup, he was given the FA Cup trophy itself to keep in 1911 when a new trophy was commissioned. Clapham () is a suburb in south west London, England, lying mostly within the London Borough of Lambeth, but with some areas (most notably Clapham Common) extending into the neighbouring London Borough of Wandsworth. Thomas Heathcote Sorby (16 February 1856 – 13 December 1930) was an English amateur footballer who made one appearance for England. Football career Sorby was born in Sheffield, the fourth of ten children of Thomas Austin Sorby (1823–1885) and Dorothy Heathcote (1826–1904). His father was a partner in Robert Sorby and Sons, the family business, described as "Edge Tool Manufacturers". He was educated at Cheltenham College and played for various Sheffield football clubs including the Thursday Wanderers and Sheffield, claimed to be the oldest football club in the world. Herbert Whitfeld
Herbert Whitfeld (15 November 1858 – 6 May 1909) was an English amateur sportsman who played association football and county cricket. In football, he helped Old Etonians win the 1879 FA Cup Final and was on the losing side in 1881 as well as making one appearance for England in 1879. In cricket, he played for Sussex County Cricket Club whom he captained in 1883 and 1884. He was later a director of Barclays Bank. Early career and education Whitfeld was born in Hamsey, near Lewes in East Sussex and was educated at Eton where he developed an interest in all forms of sport and played for the college football team in 1877.
