Linden Square

	Linden Square Linden Square is a small municipal park at Linden Place in Brookline, Massachusetts, United States. Roughly rectangular in shape with one curved side, Linden Square was laid out in 1844 by Alexander Wadsworth as part of the subdivision of the area by Thomas Aspinwall Davis. Its original pathways consisted of a horseshoe-shaped path flanking its perimeter, and a straight path that bisected the park; it now has paths that form an X, a layout adopted by the late 19th century. The park consists of grassy areas dotted with trees, and surrounded by a wrought iron fence with openings for the paths. The park was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1985. picture info	Alexander Wadsworth (landscape Designer) Alexander Wadsworth (1806-1898) was an American landscape architect and surveyor, best known for his work on the Mount Auburn Cemetery in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Born in Hiram, Maine, Wadsworth studied civil engineering at Gardiner Lyceum before beginning his work as a surveyor in the Boston, Massachusetts area. He collaborated with Henry A. S. Dearborn on the topographic details of Mount Auburn Cemetery, and had a successful career designing parks and suburban subdivisions, primarily in eastern Massachusetts. Along with Francis Peabody, he also designed the Harmony Grove Cemetery in Salem, Massachusetts. Wadsworth was a cousin of poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. 	Thomas Aspinwall Davis Thomas Aspinwall Davis (December 11, 1798 – November 22, 1845) was a silversmith and businessman who served as mayor of Boston for nine months in 1845. Early life Davis was born on December 11, 1798, in Brookline, Massachusetts, the son of Ebenezer Davis III and Lucy Aspinwall. Both the Davis and Aspinwall families were longtime residents of Brookline. Thomas' elder brother Increase Sumner Davis became a Congregational minister. Thomas grew up on Harrison Place (now Kent Street), and began work in a jeweler's shop in Boston at age 14. Business career By 1820, he was in partnership with Thomas N. Morong. 	Linden Park (Massachusetts) Linden Park is a small municipal park at Linden Place and Linden Street in Brookline, Massachusetts, USA. The triangular park was created in 1843 as one of several parks in the Lindens subdivision of the area by Thomas Aspinwall Davis, which was the first residential subdivision created in Brookline. In addition to generous setbacks, the deeds for the lots of this subdivision contained covenants excluding the sale to "Negroes or natives of Ireland". The park and neighborhood were designed by Alexander Wadsworth, and the park was originally held in common by the surrounding property owners.
