''Lincoln'' is a 1906 four-act historical play by the American actor Benjamin Chapin, known as an Abraham Lincoln impersonator. It portrays key events from the life of the assassinated president. It appeared with Chapin in the title role, at the Liberty Theatre on Broadway where it followed straight on from Thomas Dixon Jr.'s controversial ''The Clansman'', which glorified the Ku Klux Klan. Benjamin Chapin
Benjamin Chapin (August 9, 1872 – June 2, 1918) was an American stage actor best known as an impersonator of Abraham Lincoln. From childhood Chapin had an obsession with the assassinated president, and had a lengthy career playing him on the Lyceum movement, Lyceum circuit and in vaudeville. In 1906 he wrote a play ''Lincoln (play), Lincoln'' which was staged at the Liberty Theatre on Broadway theatre, Broadway following directly on from a production of the play ''The Clansman'' by Thomas Dixon Jr. In 1917, Chapin wrote and starred in ''The Lincoln Cycle'' series of films. Liberty Theatre
The Liberty Theatre is a former Broadway theater at 234 West 42nd Street in the Theater District of Midtown Manhattan in New York City. Opened in 1904, the theater was designed by Herts & Tallant and built for Klaw and Erlanger, the partnership of theatrical producers Marc Klaw and A. L. Erlanger. The theater has been used as an event venue since 2011 and is part of an entertainment and retail complex developed by Forest City Ratner. The theater is owned by the city and state governments of New York and leased to New 42nd Street, which subleases the venue to Forest City Ratner. The Liberty consisted of an auditorium facing 41st Street and a lobby facing 42nd Street. The facade on 42nd Street is largely hidden but was designed in the neoclassical style, similar to the neighboring New Amsterdam Theatre, which was designed by the same architect. Thomas Frederick Dixon Jr. (January 11, 1864 – April 3, 1946) was an American white supremacist, Baptist minister, politician, lawyer, lecturer, novelist, playwright, and filmmaker. Referred to as a "professional racist", Dixon wrote two best-selling novels, '' The Leopard's Spots: A Romance of the White Man's Burden—1865–1900'' (1902) and '' The Clansman: A Historical Romance of the Ku Klux Klan'' (1905), that romanticized Southern white supremacy, endorsed the Lost Cause of the Confederacy, opposed equal rights for black people, and glorified the Ku Klux Klan as heroic vigilantes. ''The Clansman: A Historical Romance of the Ku Klux Klan'' is a novel published in 1905, the second work in the Ku Klux Klan trilogy by Thomas Dixon Jr. (the others are ''The Leopard's Spots'' and '' The Traitor''). Chronicling the American Civil War and Reconstruction era from a pro-Confederate perspective, it presents the Ku Klux Klan heroically. ''The Lincoln Cycle'' is a 1917 American silent series of ten short films portraying the life of American president Abraham Lincoln. They were directed by John M. Stahl and starred Benjamin Chapin, a celebrated Lincoln impersonator, in the title role. All except two episodes survive in the Library of Congress archives. It was also released as ''The Son of Democracy''. Chapin had appeared as Lincoln for many years, and had set up his own production company with the intention of making a film based on his own 1906 play ''Lincoln''. A silent film is a film with no synchronized recorded sound (or more generally, no audible dialogue). Though silent films convey narrative and emotion visually, various plot elements (such as a setting or era) or key lines of dialogue may, when necessary, be conveyed by the use of title cards. The term "silent film" is something of a misnomer, as these films were almost always accompanied by live sounds. During the silent era that existed from the mid-1890s to the late 1920s, a pianist, theater organist—or even, in large cities, a small orchestra—would often play music to accompany the films. Pianists and organists would play either from sheet music, or improvisation. Sometimes a person would even narrate the inter-title cards for the audience.
