Limerick Archives
Limerick Archives (formerly Limerick Regional Archives/Limerick City Archives) is part of Limerick City and County Council. Its purpose is to collect and preserve archival material relating to Limerick city, and to make these archives freely available to the public. The physical archives are held in the County Library, Dooradoyle. Collections Limerick Archives holds a large amount of archival material relating to the Limerick City Council as well as older administrations such as Limerick Union. Materials in the collection include Limerick Rate Books, Registration of Motor Vehicles, private papers, such as Limerick Chamber of Commerce, Bedford Row Lying-in Hospital. The Limerick Archives collections has been used for source material for publications, as well as stand alone publications. Limerick City And County Council
Limerick City and County Council ( ga, Comhairle Cathrach agus Contae Luimnigh) is the authority responsible for Local government in the Republic of Ireland, local government in the Limerick, City of Limerick and County Limerick in Republic of Ireland, Ireland. It came into operation on 1 June 2014 after the 2014 Irish local elections, 2014 local elections. It was formed by the merger of Limerick City Council and Limerick County Council under the provisions of the Local Government Reform Act 2014. University Of Limerick
The University of Limerick (UL) ( ga, Ollscoil Luimnigh) is a Public university, public research university institution in Limerick, Republic of Ireland, Ireland. Founded in 1972 as the National Institute for Higher Education, Limerick, it became a university in 1989 in accordance with the Act of the Oireachtas, University of Limerick Act 1989. It was the first university established since Irish independence in 1922, followed by the establishment of Dublin City University later the same day. Hunt Museum
The Hunt Museum ( ga, Iarsmalann Hunt) is a museum in the city of Limerick, Ireland. The Hunt Museum holds a personal collection donated by the Hunt family, it was originally situated in the University of Limerick, before being moved to its present location in Limerick's Georgian custom house in 1997. The Custom House is situated on Rutland Street on the banks of the River Shannon at its confluence with the Abbey River. Among the museum's collection are works by notable artists and designers such as Pablo Picasso, Jack B. Yeats, and Sybil Connolly as well as distinctive historical items such as the O'Dea Mitre and Crozier. The Health Service Executive (HSE) ( ga, Feidhmeannacht na Seirbhíse Sláinte) is the publicly funded healthcare system in Ireland, responsible for the provision of health and personal social services. It came into operation on 1 January 2005. The current Director-General is Stephen Mulvany on an interim basis, after Paul Reid stepped down in October 2022. Limerick Museum, previously known as the Jim Kemmy Municipal Museum, is a Local museum, city museum in Limerick, Ireland. Foundation The Limerick Museum was founded in 1907 and in the Carnegie Free Library and Museum building (established by Andrew Carnegie on Pery Square. Limerick Museum opened to the public in 1916 and remained in Pery Square until 1975. In 1979, the museum relocated to two restored houses in John Square. In 1998 the museum was moved again this time to Castle Lane where it opened to the public in 1999. Shannon Airport ( ga, Aerfort na Sionainne) is an international airport located in County Clare in the Republic of Ireland. Jimmy Deenihan
Jimmy Deenihan (born 11 September 1952) is an Irish former Fine Gael politician who served as Minister of State for the Diaspora from 2014 to 2016, Minister for Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht from 2011 to 2014 and Minister of State at the Department of Agriculture, Food and Forestry from 1994 to 1997. He served as a Teachta Dála (TD) from 1987 to 2016. He was a Senator from 1983 to 1987, after being nominated by the Taoiseach. Deenihan played Gaelic football for the Kerry county team in the 1970s and 1980s. He also played rugby with Garryowen. Mary Immaculate College
Mary Immaculate College (Coláiste Mhuire gan Smál), also known as MIC and Mary I, is a College of Education and Liberal Arts. Founded in 1898, the university level College of Education and the Liberal Arts is academically linked with the University of Limerick. Limerick Lace
Limerick lace is a specific class of lace originating in Limerick, Ireland, which was later produced throughout the country. It evolved from the invention of a machine which made net in 1808. Until John Heathcoat invented a net-making machine in Devon in 1815, handmade net was a very expensive fabric. This meant cheap net became available to Irish lacemakers, particularly after 1823 when Heathcoat's patent expired. Limerick lace is a hybrid lace of embroidered needle lace or crocheted lace on a machine made net base. It is a 'mixed lace' rather than a ‘true lace’, which would be entirely hand made. Limerick lace comes in two forms: tambour lace, which is made by stretching a net over a frame like a tambourine and drawing threads through it with a hook, and needlerun lace, which is made by using a needle to embroider on a net background. Limerick ( ; ga, Luimneach ) is a western city in Ireland situated within County Limerick. It is in the province of Munster and is located in the Mid-West which comprises part of the Southern Region. Matthew Potter
Matthew Potter is an Irish academic who serves as the current curator of Limerick Museum. He is a published historian with a primary focus on governmental history and is an Honorary Fellow of the Department of History of the University of Limerick. Potter has also focused on discovering links between Limerick the place and limerick the poem. He was educated in the Abbey Vocational School, Donegal Town and the Crescent College, Limerick City. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in history from the University of London and a Doctor of Philosophy in history from the National University of Ireland, Galway.
