Lime Kiln
A lime kiln is a kiln used for the calcination of limestone (calcium carbonate) to produce the form of lime (material), lime called quicklime (calcium oxide). The chemical equation for this chemical reaction, reaction is :Calcium carbonate, CaCO3 + heat → Calcium oxide, CaO + Carbon dioxide, CO2 This reaction can take place at anywhere above 840 °C (1544 °F), but is generally considered to occur at 900 °C(1655 °F) (at which temperature the partial pressure of CO2 is 1 atmosphere (unit), atmosphere), but a temperature around 1000 °C (1832 °F) (at which temperature the partial pressure of CO2 is 3.8 atmospheres) is usually used to make the reaction proceed quickly.Parkes, G.D. and Mellor, J.W. (1939). ''Mellor's Modern Inorganic Chemistry'' London: Longmans, Green and Co. Excessive temperature is avoided because it produces unreactive, "dead-burned" lime. Slaked lime (calcium hydroxide) can be formed by mixing quicklime with water. Early li ...

Limekiln State Park
Limekiln State Park is a California state park on the Big Sur coast. It contains four lime kilns from an 1887–1890 lime-calcining operation, plus a beach, redwood forest, and Limekiln Falls. It is located south of Lucia on Big Sur Coast Highway. The park was established in 1994. Cultural history From 1887 to 1890 the Rockland Lime and Lumber Company harvested limestone from a scree slope and fed it into four iron and stone lime kilns they erected onsite. Long exposure to very hot fires extracted lime. Barrels of lime were slid on a cable out to Rockland Cove, where they were loaded onto ships. The lime was a key ingredient in the cement that was used for construction in San Francisco and Monterey. However, after three years the company had exhausted most of the limestone as well as the redwood used to fire the kilns. A trail leads from the Big Sur Coast Highway to the ruins of the lime smelting operations, which include four kilns and some stone walls and bridge ab ...

Lime Kiln Road
Dutchess County, New York maintains a system of signed county routes primarily to serve local traffic between the various communities in the county. Route numbers below 100 generally increase progressively based on the alphabetical order of the towns where they are primarily located, beginning with Amenia and ending with Washington; however, several exceptions exist. The newer routes numbered 100 and up do not follow this pattern. County routes in Dutchess County never enter cities and only a few enter villages. Routes are signed with the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices-standard yellow-on-blue pentagon route marker. These pentagon markers began to appear through the county in 1985. Routes 1–50 Routes 51–100 Routes 101 and up See also *County routes in New York In the U.S. state of New York, county routes exist in all 62 counties except those in the five boroughs of New York City. Lime Kiln Light
The Lime Kiln Light is a functioning navigational aid located on Lime Kiln Point overlooking Dead Man's Bay on the western side of San Juan Island, San Juan County, Washington, in the United States. It guides ships through the Haro Straits and is part of Lime Kiln Point State Park, which offers tours during summer months. History The Lime Kiln Light was established in 1914 when acetylene lights were placed on Lime Kiln Point, a name derived from the lime kilns built there in the 1860s. It was the last major light established in Washington. The light was updated five years later with a octagonal concrete tower rising from the fog signal building, a design that matches the Alki Point Light in Seattle. Two keeper's houses and other structures also date from around this time. A fourth-order Fresnel lens was first exhibited from the new tower on June 30, 1919. Lime Kilns (Lincoln, Rhode Island)
The Lime Kilns of Lincoln, Rhode Island, are the remnants of three colonial-era lime kilns, all that is left of one of the oldest lime processing operations in North America. They are located respectively off Louisquisset Pike, Sherman and Dexter Rock Roads in an area that has been known for its lime processing since the 17th century. When originally built, they were roughly cylindrical structures fashioned out of unmortared rubble stone. The first kiln, whose ruins are located near the Flanagan campus of the Community College of Rhode Island west of Louisquisset Pike (approximately ), was the largest of the three, nearly in diameter. The second kiln remains are located to the south of Sherman Avenue, near its junction with Louisquisset Pike (approximately ). In 1984 the standing walls were high, with three recognizable openings. The third kiln, of which only a partial wall remains standing, is located on the south side of Dexter Rock Road (approximately ). The kilns w ...
